  • Extended Induction question help!!!

Hi, I have a question. If I'm happy with the food choice on induction can I say here? I don't have a problem and I'm really statisfied after every meal. One more question can we skip rungs?

Thanks for reading and thanks for the support.

    Re: Extended Induction question help!!!

There are no rungs on Induction. When you extend your Induction, you commit yourself to following the Induction Rules by eating the foods on the Foods List and limiting your daily net carb intake to 20.

I know there is a bit of confusion about what 'extended Induction' is. And I know alot of the people here are really doing OWL because they eat more veggies than they do, or they incorporate OWL foods into their menues.

Rungs are an OWL and Pre-Maintenance thing. Once you start adding OWL foods and/or start eating above that magical 20 net carb daily limit----you're technically doing OWL.

Thanks for that. I still have one another question. Then if I'm not board with the food or the 20 net carbs, then it's OK to stay on induction?

        Re: Extended Induction question help!!!

The last sentence in Chapter 13 of DANDR 2002 is this:

People with high metabolic resistance can benefit from doing Induction longer than two weeks because it gives them time to correct the metabolic imbalances they may have developed over time.
In other words, staying on Induction offers no real benefits to those of us who have moderate to low metabolic resistance. That means, staying on it longer will not ensure 'faster' weight loss.

Also, if you read the Second Time Around Forum or the "I'm back" threads, you will see a pattern of people doing "extended Induction", getting bored with their food choices, and falling off the diet.

Sure you might say "I'm totally happy with what I'm eating now". But will you be totally happy when spring and summer comes and the farmer's markets and grocery stores are filled with berries, melons, peaches and other non-Induction foods? I've been around here long enough to have read the "I feel so bad because I cheated because I couldn't resist eating strawberries this weekend!"

I would say, if you do not have a high metabolic resistance, move to OWL Phase. I wrote this in an OWL thread because people freak out and think OWL is "too hard". When you get dressed for an evening out, what do you do? You choose a dress and then you add accessories, do your hair and make-up to spice up your look, right?

That's what you do during OWL. Your basic dress is the Induction foods (especially the 3 cups of vegetables). The OWL food rungs are your accessories to spice up your Induction menu. So Rung 1 is like the shoes you choose to wear with your dress. Rung 2 is like the lipstick. Rung 3 is like you hair style. Rung 4 is the jewelry. And so forth.

YAY! The next 'phase' or 'rung' is to just add more vegetables anyway. Veggies are so good for you, and they really become the basis of your diet.

Meg's example of the black dress and accessories is RIGHT ON.

Since it's not a good idea to skip rungs, you definitely want to make sure that you've worked your way through veggies, dairy, and nuts by the time berry and melon season gets here. Yum Yum.

And then there is modified OWL...you can skip rungs, or go on up the rungs, find your CCLL and then back down on carbs from a high rung...

... and you still get to lose on OWL! Some even lose more on run 1. Gotta love Atkins!

                      Re: Extended Induction question help!!!

On-Going Weight Loss Phase (OWL) is still Atkins. Induction is only 1 phase. Alot people make the mistake of believing that Induction is the entire Atkins weight loss diet. That's the furtherest from the truth. The diet was designed so that you lose the majority of your weight during OWL Phase.
