  • In Ketosis but Gaining?

    Hmmm.
I'm a bit bitter. I have bought the ketostix, and every day I have checked and seen that I am in heavy ketosis, but in the past 4 days I have gained 6 pounds.
    What is going on?

As far as menus ...Wow, this is a difficult one for me, as I have not been measuring anymore. I will have to stat keeping better track, I have not had anything illigal tho, and I have been eating the same foods and amounts as I have been this month. No more than 1500-2000 calories a day.

I have been drinking about 3 qrts of water daily, an approx. 1-2 sodas a day. The sodas are diet and sweetened with Splenda.

I am taking no meds at the current time, although I did take 2 water pills on Saturday, because my hands and feet have been swelling, but to my surprise they did not work. I do have heart issues.

TOM ended last week, and I was down to 259 last week and remained there until 2 days ago.

Lately i have been craving salt and using more than usual, which I thought would be causing water intake, but when I used the water pills, nothing came out.

No real exercise at all this week, I made one trip to the gym last week, and that was all for the month.

I am weighing first thing in the morning after using the restroom. Bathroom seems to still be on scheduele.

    Re: In Ketosis but Gaining?

We're gonna need a *lot* more info from you than that if we're going to be of any help.

    1. A couple days worth of menus, please. Not only what, but how much of what. If it went in your mouth, list it.

    2. What are you drinking and how much?

    3. Medications? Health issues?

    4. Where are you at in your cycle? Is TOM coming up?

    5. How is your sodium intake?

    6. Exercise? What, how much, and when did you start?

    7. When are you weighing?

There are other things you'll need to take into consideration - like your bathroom habits - if you know what I mean. If there's been a change there, that could be part of the problem as well.

It's also important to remember that just because you're in ketosis doesn't guarantee fat loss. You can be in ketosis and gain weight just like you can lose weight and never be in ketosis. It's not going to matter if you're in ketosis or not if you're eating 4000 calories a day (or whatever - if it's more than your body needs).

        Re: In Ketosis but Gaining?

Go back to writing everything down that goes in your mouth, use fitday. Sometimes you'll spot a problem...and always make sure you are 'real' with yourself about quantities.

Being that your hands and feet are swelling, I'd say you have water retention issues. 96 ounces (3 quarts) of water in a day is pretty good water consumption...so it might be sodium related. Maybe ditch the sodas and see what happens?

If it continues to go up that rapidly, I'd say see your doctor. My grandmother has heart issues and water retention that severe is a sign that something is going wrong.

The only other thing could be that you have an allergy to some food in your diet. Without specific menus, we can't identify common culprits. But, think back, have you eaten anything in the last couple days that you haven't eaten since you started. It might be a food that you've eaten all your life, but you hadn't eaten it since starting atkins until this week....

          Re: In Ketosis but Gaining?

My weight fluctuates wildly from week to week I have even gained at one time when I was bigger 16 lbs in a matter of 5 days it all did come off. If you are craving more salt then usual and you feel like you are blaoted then most likely what is happening is your body is retaining fliuid. Sometimes we tend to retain and crave salt when our eletrolights are out of whack this in turn leads to weight gain as in fluid weight not fat weight. What types of suppliments are you taking. You need to take suppliments and potassium and magnesium and a multi are highly recommended on this woe and may actually help you to stop craving salt. The Atkins Woe is a natural Dieuretc so you should not need water pills. I would recommend that you first off cut down on the salt and most pop does have a sodium comtent in it and too much can also make you gain weight. Sometimes also what happens is that right before our body has a WHOOSHIE as they call it your body will retain some water to take up the space of the fat you are using. This in turn leads to swelling of the fat cells and also this is why your fat feels squishy right before you lose. I almost guarantee that if you stick to it, you will no doubt have a whooshie, especially if you cut back on the salt and such. Don't lose hope I have had very long stalls and have felt the way that you do, but never give up and know that this is most likely a natural thing that your body does as it loses weight.

Make sure to up your water and try to replace your pop with water. You should be drinking 8 cups of water plus one for every 25lbs you are overweight. This will also help you to flush out fat and metabolits which can plug up the body, the by products of weight loss which aren't too great for us.

I hope that this helped I am sure that you will see a loss but, also be sure you are measuring cause the scale is EVIL and only tells us a number even though you can be losing fat and shaping your body it may not reflect what you want. That is a huge downfall that a lot of people have during weight loss, is depending too much on the numbers.

          KEEP GOING STONG.

              Re: In Ketosis but Gaining?

I agree with the others... sounds like water retention. A visit to the docs would be wise if things don't improve in a few days. As Sarah said though, you might well have a nice whooshie just round the corner.

I would have to agree with the others. It is very important to take supplements - especially potassium if you are retaining water. Same thing happened to my DH and he now takes a potassium supplement and he does not have any more swelling of the loegs and any of those issues. Good luck and keep you the great work!

How are those jeans that you got into a couple of weeks ago? That's how I have had to measure "success". I can't handle the scale, so I choose to avoid it. I have chosen a pair of jeans I used to be able to wear and gauge how I am doing as to how they fit. Keep your nose to the grindstone, we are all in the same boat at some point or another !

Thank you for posting this! Makes me feel alot better. I have started a new weight training routine about 3wks ago. I have lost 2.5 inches since december... (another half inch this morning! WOOHOO) but the scale has climbed since I started atkins! from 134 to 140! Hopefully it will go back down! It is soooo nerve wracking to see the jumps like that. Although you feel smaller. I am not to worried as I was before....I am still in a 5/6 and sometimes a small 7. As long as I don't go up in size I am ok. So thank you for that reminder!

Sherice you are very welcome sometimes we get cought up so much in the numbers we forget about the real issue.

Question 1 are we getting smaller well if the answer is yes then who cares nobody knows what you weigh and the numbers are so discouraging especially if you think that you have to be a certain number to be happy.
