  • Should I continue...

    Hi all,
I just finished week 3 on Induction. I lost a little more than 4 pounds this week. I am down 12.8 pounds since February 1st. One week I had a 2oz gain (Atkins bars are evil!!!) I put my stats in my sig Soooo, should I keep going with Induction or should I move up. I REALLY want to get out of these 300's (my first goal), but I have heard not moving up can stop weight loss. Thanks so much everyone. I'm so glad I found these boards and all of you

    Re: Should I continue...

I think you should move on to OWL! Rung 1 of OWL is just another serving of veggies from the induction foods list. Personally, I love OWL because it gives me more options for food choices. I thought it was really hard on induction to ONLY eat 3 cups of veggies, especially if I ate a salad as a meal! So now, you can enjoy pumpkin AND green beans for dinner, or have an entree salad for lunch and not worry so much about saving your veggie allotments! You can move up the rungs as quickly or as slowly as you want, though it's recommended to stay on a rung for at least a week or two. My weight loss increased dramatically after moving to OWL, and I've lost the majority of my weight in this phase!

Julirama is right - OWL (ongoing weightloss) is the main weightloss stage of Atkins, so by moving on you will continue to lose weight but be allowed more choices!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I agree with Juli... am another OWL fan. You can stay on the veggie rung for a long time, if you want to... and the addition of extra veggies often makes people lose even faster!
Congrats on your progress so far!

              Re: Should I continue...

Yes, do it in order. I don't suggest skipping rungs (with the exception of Rung 5 which is wine and low carb spirits--by all means, skip it if you don't drink!) because it's always good to try new things. The foods are also reintroduced in order of lowest GI to highest GI. So you'll be eating things that have a lesser impact on blood sugar in the lower rungs, and gradually adding in those higher GI foods as you climb.

OWL is somewhat personalized and tailored for each individual. I moved up a rung every 2 or 3 weeks, but kept my carbs at a level that I knew I would keep losing weight. For example, this is what I did:

Rung 1: Stayed for 2 weeks, 20g carbs per day (I usually only ate 15g during induction, so going up to rung 1 finally put me at 20g per day!)
Rung 2: Stayed for 2 weeks, 25g carbs per day
Rung 3: Stayed for 2 weeks, 25-30g per day
Rung 4: Skipped temporarily (came back after Rung 5, 2 weeks)
Rung 5: Stayed for 2 weeks, 25-30g per day
Rung 6: Stayed for 6 weeks, 30-35g per day
Rung 7: Stayed for 2 weeks, 40g per day
Rung 8: CURRENTLY HERE, 45g per day, going to stay for about a month.

It's important to only control one variable at a time. For instance, if you're adding a new food, DON'T increase your carb intake. Wait until you're eating foods that you know are "safe" and then go up 5g. If you're going up 5g, don't add new foods. This just makes it easier to pinpoint the reason for a stall or <god forbid> a gain.

I think people have also found their CCLL in the lower rungs, and then consistently ate below that level while moving up the rest of the rungs. The process is up to you.

I absolutely love OWL, and forsee no problems eating this way for the rest of my life. I know what foods I can eat, what foods to avoid, and I NEVER feel deprived or bored.

I hope this advice helps...and I'm so happy you decided to move to OWL!

It helped A LOT!!! Thank you so much for all your help Julie. You have helped me so much. You're a sweet heart I have one more question...lol. Did you stop losing weight a lot as you went up the rungs. I'm afraid Even though I have read it'll be fine. I think it all just takes some getting use to, and figuring out my own body. Thanks again for all you help and support. It means a lot

There are several useful and informative threads at the top of the 'OWL Forum' which will help you get your head around the concept of adding more carbs but continuing losing weight.

                      Re: Should I continue...

When I began OWL in October, I was consistently losing about 2-3 pounds a week. In December I did have a bit of a scale stall--I lost lots of inches, but stayed at the same weight--this was due to adding strength training and had nothing to do with the foods I was eating. In January I lost about 2 pounds per week, eating about 40g per day. I'm now trying to find my CCLL and I've been eating about 50g per day. So far, I've lost about 40 pounds since October doing OWL. My weight loss has slowed down lately, but I'm still losing inches. And this is my choice. I have been adding carbs lately, and adding new foods, because I want more variety and I want practice doing this the right way, in a real-life sense. So in fact, I am voluntarily choosing the slow-down.

BUT, keep in mind, each person is different, and we all have different "threshholds" of how many grams of carbs we can consume and still lose weight (CCLL). It's best to progress in a way you feel comfortable.

This is one of my pet peeves. Many people say that they are doing 'extended induction' yet they are eating 3 cups of lettuce in their lunch salad from McDonalds or Applebees or whatever restaurant they are at. That is NOT induction, that is Ongong Weight Loss rung 1. Yet those are the same people who will argue tooth and nail that they cannot "move up" because they will stop losing.

Move up into the veggie rung, you can stay there as long as you like. Veggies are full of minerals and nutrients and fiber that our bodies thrive on.
