  • Whole Family discouraged - Parents cheating...

    Hello,

My mom, dad and I have been on Atkins since January 27th of this year. We have all been losing weight very very slowly and my father is getting discouraged. My mother has been cheating all the time and eating so many "Bites" that she's practically not on it. She then complains she is not losing any weight! As for my dad... He cheates somewhat but he still loses about a pound a week. He thinks this is too slow and has threatened giving up the diet all together. A few weeks ago I sent him to a few of the links on this forum and it helped change his mind... But now he is back on the mindset of "Aw just screw it I'll eat what I want." And my mother always is begging for us to order a pizza and it drives me nuts!

I have also been losing very slowly. Abot 1 pound a week as well. However, I JUST now have started seriously excersizing as we got our elliptical a few days ago. I did it for 10 minutes yesterday and wore me out. However, my dad said he didn't want to do it because he had a headache, and my mom just flat out admitted she didn't want to do it. I think they are losing any hope that this diet has to make them healthy. My father often complains that he feels like crap all of the time and he thinks it may be the diet. So to test this theory, he pigged our on mexican food last night to see if it makes him feel better. I still don't know the verdict on that one!

Anyway... The point of all this... We're all getting pretty discouraged by the diet. I have been staying on it as strict as ever and I am even losing very slowly! My parents on the other hand are on the brink of giving up and nothing I say or do is getting them to change their minds. They just cheat so much now they practically have fallen off!

    Any response is appreciated, thanks...

I think the "I won't cheat" mindset has to come from them... I'm talking about your parents of course. You can encourage them by example, and certainly try to talk them around, but at the end of the day they've got to make that commitment by themselves, for themselves.

If you carry on getting slimmer before their eyes, it might tip the balance and get them back on track. I hope so.

Re your slow weight loss... have you posted any menus in the "review my menu" forum? Sometimes it's something quite small that needs tweaking to speed things up. Take heart though... you are losing and it's direction rather than speed that counts.

I agree with Sally, My daughter started with me and within 3 days she gave it up. Now she is seeing my weight loss. The other day she was talking about how big she is getting, and looking at me and seeing my loss I think she was a lil envious. Because I did my lil Anna Nicole stance and said ATKINS BABY. She went into a little sarcastic rant about exploding hearts, I just laughed and went about my businees.

As for loosing slow, I feel your pain there, I have only lost about 15 lbs since I began on Jan 9th, but to me the slow loss just means I am loosing at a healthy rate.

If you stick to your guns and they dont, you will be so happy with yourself in a couple months and they too will see that it works.
        Good luck!!

Ditto the advice the others gave. I think if you make exercise a regular event you will notice a bigger difference, not only in pounds lost, but in inches. Stick with it, and let your success speak for itself.

Well done for starting to exercise
Dont try to do too much at once, though before too long I am sure you will be able to do more so dont worry about only being able to do a short time at first.

I agree that you might find it worthwhile posting some menus you have been eating (with quantities) in our 'Review my Menu' forum to see if anyone can offer any advice.

Re: Whole Family discouraged - Parents cheating...

Hey and thank you all for your responses.

I am making a giant egg salad lunch right now for the whole fam. so they aren't swayed to go an order a pizza or grab some doughnuts! I am craving that stuff as much as them but I know that that food will just send me back to square one... Perhaps I will send them some more posts from this forum... That helped my dad before!

I am very curious to see my results from excersise. I figure that even if I don't lose any weight my body must be healthier anyway from the lack of carbs and sugar. I have also been staying in the "Heavy" colors when I tinkle on a keto-stick...

You all are inspiration enough to stay strictly on this diet! Whenever I'm needing another dose of inspiration I just go on here... Perhaps the 'rents just need a dose on inspiration?

Off to finish making that egg salad... Thanks again,

Re: Whole Family discouraged - Parents cheating...

I definately agree. Stick with it, even tho I can understand it must be hard with what ur parents are saying and doing.

I'm sure if you started to increase ur exercise then you should start seeing the weight come off a little be quicker.

At the end of the day, the only person who can make the right choices is YOU. You can encourage and talk to ur parents until you are blue in the face and they still might go and pig out on pizza. They need to make the decision themselves. Hopefully they will see the good it is doing to you and will join you on the Atkins wagon.
