  • anyone having problems with canker sores?

    Hi there,
I'm doing an extended induction because I have a crap load of weight to lose- so I have been eating the induction way for 37 days now. I have a slight allergy to tomatoes that causes me to have canker sores, but I limit the amount of tomato I eat.

I have noticed in the last week that I have developed about 3 or 4 canker sores in my mouth and I was just wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I'm going to start taking a potassium supplement and start having my half an avacado every day again, but I'm not sure if that's what it is.

If anyone else has had this problem, please let me know what you did to correct it.

    Thanks!

If I eat anything that is acid, like tomatoes, to much or often, I will get them too....I personally don't have to stop eating them..I just limit myself. Give us an ex. of your menu and see if we can help you out!
So....I fell off the band wagon...BUT I'M BACK!!! More Ready than ever!

Yeah acidic stuff has that effect on me too. I was doing well with it until I hit the veggie rung and added more veggies, started adding fresh tomato to salads, but it doesn't like me. Bummer. It's really good.

Just limit your intake of this kind of stuff.

I would suggest dropping the tomatoes from your menus for the time being and seeing what happens.
If the sores heal and dont return it might be that by eating a much fresher 'cleaner' diet than the 'average diet' has made the effect tomatoes have on you to be more intense and you might need to drop them completely.
I have a friend who can never eat strawberries unless she is willing to suffer the effects they have on her, but she manages to enjoy a very varied diet without them.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: anyone having problems with canker sores?

thanks everyone- I started taking a zinc supplement as well as a tablet of potassium to go with my avacado everyday. They are starting to heal up - I think that because I was pregnant and eating everything under the sun- including a ton of nuts and seeds I didn't get them at all- now that I am not eating high zinc foods like nuts and seeds the tomato is wreaking havoc on my mouth. I had some this morning and it didn't seem to bother me- they seem to be a lot more tender in the evening time, after I have been using my mouth all day! I think I'm just going to limit my intake of tomato to one to two a week. I really do like them and they are so refreshing- I make an avacado, cucumber and tomato salad some nights if I don't feel like lettuce in my salad. It's so refreshing. I have had a minor problem with them since I was about 11, but this last couple of weeks was rediculous!

Thanks for the feedback- I'm glad to know that others have had to tweak their diet a bit because of this as well. I feel great still- the potassium has helped my energy a lot so far as well.

Re: anyone having problems with canker sores?

i only get canker sores when i am under huge stress...swishing warm salt water a few times a day really helps along with the zinc. lysene is also very good for healing canker sores. hope you feel better!

It's sad- I love tomato so much I'm almost willing to deal with this- I will cut back a lot though. Definitely can't have them more than 2 times a week by the looks of it.

Re: anyone having problems with canker sores?

Hi everyone. I've had mouth ulcers or canker sores as you guys call them for the past week and I was wondering why. I couldn't figure it out. Anyhow, having just read this post, I did a little seach online and found the below article. I'm going to take some vitamin supplements to try and get rid!
Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top

Canker sores are a common form of mouth ulcer. They occur in women more often than men. They may occur at any age, but usually first appear between the ages of 10 and 40.

Canker sores usually appear on the inner surface of the cheeks and lips, tongue, soft palate, and the base of the gums.

Canker sores can run in families. They may also be linked to problems with the body's immune (defense) system. The sores may occur after a mouth injury due to dental work, aggressive tooth cleaning, or biting the tongue or cheek.

Canker sores can be triggered by emotional stress, dietary deficiencies (especially iron, folic acid, or Vitamin B-12), menstrual periods, hormonal changes, food allergies, and
and similar situations. They occur most commonly with viral infections. In some cases, the cause can not be identified.

A great natural medication for canker sores is Tea Tree Oil. It's an essential oil grown in australia, which has inherent antiseptic qualities. You can find it in your natural health store. Deluted with water you can use it as a mouth wash. Also, Olive leaf extract is a great anti fungul, anti virul, and anti bacterial. I've been taking it for three years and havn't had a cold or flu.
