  • Is Fit Day Right?

    I walked on the treadmill today for 45 minutes at 3.0 MPH. Fit day says that at 190 lbs I only burned 133 calories. Other websites are saying anywhere between 280 and 310. I'd have to believe the other websites more because it seems like 133 calories for 45 minutes is nothing, you burn that much by sitting and watching tv without moving for an hour.

    Depends on your weight too. If I walk the treadmill (Precor, top of the line) for 30 minutes at 3.5mph at 1% incline and it burns 150 cal. My weight is 130 lb. What I do is walk the treadmill for 1 hour in the am and 1 hour in the pm and that adds up to 600 calories (I did this every day when I stalled - watched TV at the same time, The Supranos and the news.)

      I weight 190 lbs, so I'm certainly burning more than you at 130...but then why does fit day give such a low number?

        Re: Is Fit Day Right?

        Snuggles, I don't know what the right answer is. However, I have found Fitday (which I still use) to be about 40% lower than the same calories that my gym and my fitness tracker say that I burn. Here is an example of this mornings workout. These are all based on my weight of 269 lbs.

        10 minute warmup on the stationary bike (Precor @ 100 watts, distance 2.4 miles)
        Fitday = 72 calories burned
        Machine itself at gym = 125
        Fitness Tracker = 121

        26 minutes on the treadmill 3.6 mph, 0 grade (Precor, distance 1.5 miles)
        Fitday = 125 calories burned
        Machine itself = 207
        Fitness Tracker = 201

        20 minute workout on resistance weights (Nautilus)
        Fitday = 64 calories burned
        Fitness Tracker = 112

        Anybody else have any ideas?

        Editing to add: I just went to my Fitness Tracker and subtracted 100 lbs from my weight (don't I wish it was really that easy to do in real life!), and the amounts that I came up with (with me weighing in at 169 lbs) were right about what Fitday has for me at 269 lbs.. 70 on the bike, 126 for walking, and 76 for the weights.

          The best thing to do is get a heartrate monitor--that will let you know when you're in fat-burning mode, or cardio mode, and will also tell you how many calories you're burning, etc. The problem with a machine or fitday or any other program is that it's an estimate, and usually somewhat inaccurate, because it's making a generalization about you and your activity. I might burn more calories than somebody else who weighs 186 because I have more muscle, but the treadmill doesn't know that. You should treat the estimates that fitday gives you as such--estimates.

            One way that I estimate calories burned is by distance. For walking and running, GENERALLY I burn about 100 calories per mile, regardless of if it's walking or running.
