  • Alcohol - help!

    Hey guys.

    I'm on extended induction (have been for a long time...long, long time). I dont drink - not for atkins reason, I just dont like it. Anyway i've been offered a promotion at work and I have to go for work drinks with the boss. I'm going to have a few drinks because they already give me a heap of slack about not drinking - plus i wouldnt mind a few, i've only drunk once in the past 6 months.

    I just drink vidka and soda water - 0 carbs.

    My question is: Alchol doesnt make you put on weight but it is the first energy source used when you consume it. So what should i eat that day to make sure energy i'm not burning because of the booze is not turned to fat?

    A few protein meals and snacks and maybe 5-10 grams of carbs that day? Keep the carbs down a bit so they dont turned to stored fat when i use alcohol as my energy source?

    Hello,

    I am a bartender and have been on atkins for 5 days. I had drinks on day 3 of induction when I was only down 4 pounds. I had Vodka and diet red bull. Actually about four of them. I was a little worried but when my customers offer a drink its a little rude to say no. So the next day I was worried I was going to have a gain or even a stall. Nope...nothing! I actually lost 1.5 lbs. I actually tested the strips the next day and they were still dark purple. Not sure if this helps and Im not saying its okay. But Im down 2.5 more pounds for a total of 4 pounds since that night. Hope this helps. Oh, yeah and my goal was for every drink I had I would drink an extra 8oz of water. That may of had something to do with it. Good Luck!

      Remember that alcohol affects the ketostix... and will give you a false positive. Sorry for the downer.

        I've had wine and it has not affected me losing weight. Perhaps not at the same rate, but I am still losing. Try just to have one or two.

          I don't know about your actual problem but I'm a little confused about the fact that you have to have a drink.
          They give you slack because you should drink but don't?
          Like "OK, we'll let it slide this time but you have to drink with us next time"?
          Why can't you just say, sure I'll go out with you but I'll stick to my water?
          Date to reach goal: I don't care, as long as it happens :P

            I too have had wine since I started and it hasn't caused me to gain...same boat as erinl...maybe not as fast as I could be losing, but nonetheless...the water with your drinks is also a great tip...keeps me from having that extra glass of wine sometimes and also keeps you flushing that water through your system...

              Dot,

              I'm not sure that there is anything you can eat to improve the impact of your body burning the alcohol before it reverts back to burning your stored fat. But I do know that when I first started induction I had many many rum + CokeZeros those first two weeks, and once I stopped them my rate of weight lose DEFINITELY improved. Sounds like you already know how that works though.

              Congratulations on your promotion - too bad you're getting all that peer pressure to drink when you don't really even enjoy it! Maybe once you get comfortable in your new shoes you can take a stand with them though!

                Hi Dotultimate, do your own thing, follow your plan. It's your life-style, your WOE you want to change - not theirs.

                If you still struggle with that, then, just secretly ask the waiter or bar tender to always bring you "Vodka & soda with a sclice of lemon" but without the Vodka .... I'm sure nobody will notice. Oh...and congrats on the promotion!!!!

                  Hey Guys! Thanks for the encouragement! I'm happy to go have a drink with them - its a very social workplace and i'm the only one who doesnt have a drink. I use to love drinking and I wouldnt mind an evening to relax! I'm just worried about Atkins... however, first time i was on induction i drunk constantly and lost heaps - however now that i'm only 8pounds from my goal its A LOT harder to budge that weight. I'll just make sure I dont do any drunken snacking!

                    I think that during the day, I'd eat a tad more fat than usual - maybe some extra cheese, or salad dressing, or something like that.

                    Then, 1/2 hour before you go out, have a piece of string cheese or something that is loaded in fat - even 5-6 macademia nuts (not really induction, but used in the fat fast because they are literally made of fat).

                    The thing to REALLY worry about is whether the alcohol (one, two, or more drinks) will lower your resistence to carby foods. Try to make sure there are olives or other acceptable munchies available to you so that if/when you are tempted to indulge, you can do it with something legal.

                      I dont have to worry about being tempted to eat carby foods - I just dont eat them. I've been on the WOL for over a year and have never cheated. I dont see carbs as an option. I'll definately up the fat I consume in the day.

                      Effectively the alcohol can't make me gain weight... it will just postpone the burning of my own fat until I have used it.....

                      SO, i'm going to up the fat in the day, leave my walking shoes and at work, and then after the drinks, force my boyfriend to walk home with me (which will take around an hour).

                      That way i'll burn the alcoho, energy AND reduce the liklihood of a hangover in the morning

                            Ha! I know I know! I'm going to have some tuna salad a half hour before i start drinking and then make sure to eat something a bit afterwards too. Im going to pace myself... no falling on my bum infront of my work mates!

                              I Was Wondering The Same As U...im 8 Weeks In Now And I Have A Party Coming Up This Weekend....i Drank About 3 Weeks In (vodka & Water & A Tsp Of Lemon Juice) I Still Continued To Loose Weight..i Figure If Its Only Once In Awhile And I Dont Drink Pop With It Im Cool..but Everybody Is Different..go Out And Have A Good Time...before Atkins I Drank Every Weekend And At First It Was Just As Hard As Giving Up My Fav. Foods But Im Getting Better...but Almost 2 Months In Ive Lost 30 Lbs And I Want To Celebrate...i Was Afraid Of The Drunkin Eating Too Lol...but Make Sure U Have Something Legal To Snack On And U Should Be Fine!!!
