  • Gained alot and didn't cheat!

During induction I lost about 5 Kilos in 10 days and looked amazing in the mirror, inches had gone and my fat ratios and my BMI had dropped in proportion.
Then came TOM in stops and starts and while I didn't cheat, I have put back on all the loss within 2 days!! I can't believe it...I've been exercising and using Fitday religiously. 10 days on, TOM is still grinding to a halt and I have re-lost 1 kilo but checking my BMI again, it's zoomed back up again too.
I've been going over my figures in Fitday, everything looks ok, I'm not overeating protein, there's plenty of fat, I'm eating a variety of my full veggie allowance properly too and I'm drinking well. It's exactly as it was when I was losing during the first 10 days on induction.
    Inches have come back too

Does anyone have ANY ideas what's going on?
I just thought- although I don't feel constipated, I don't go to the toilet as often as I used to, so could a buildup of fats in the intestines be adding weight and substance to the scales and making my BMI appear higher?
Please, can someone offer suggestions, ideas, explanations, anything to reassure me?

Just wanted to add something - I did exercise alot during induction and though it's been impossible to get to the gym 3x a week , I'm walking alot and exercising at home so that I can keep up some form of activity till I get back to the gym. I alos wonder about the water retension and how the Atkins plan affects it. Before Atkins, I tended to retain quite alot pre TOM but it fell away by the time TOM had started but now, (if it is WR), it's hanging on and on, but then again, that doesn't explain why my BMI has shot up as well...

well.. ketosis causes water loss. so you loose a good portion of water during that time which can lead to the illusion of fat loss. The truth is that you probably didn't loose a whole lot of fat but lost a lot of water. Many people's weight springs back up and the loss becomes more gradual, which is actually a healthier approach. Very few people can loose 5 fat kilos in 2 weeks. Also, if you are exercising during that time it will make you even more dehydrated. Not exercising as much, TOM, and moving to the next phase all cause you to regain water. Don't sweat it because if you stay the path, the weight will come off.

I agree with grovemonkey. After induction I stalled and actually gained back a few pounds but now I am losing about 1.5 pounds a week. Keep doing the right things and the weight will come off.

also, its logical your BMI went up when your weight goes up.
the BMI is calculated with your weight so this is nothing to be shocked about.
my weight goes up and down all the time, the times when i was going from loss to loss are long gone lol.

You say you are exercising a lot too. There could be an element of muscle building in there too. Muscle weighs heavier than fat, volume for volume, so that would be a "good" gain.

Stick to plan and the weight (or the inches) will drop sooner or later. You can do it!

Thanks guys, I'm still concerned about the BMI as I use a home monitor to check it and feel that after almost 3 weeks on induction and extended induction, I should have lost something, not be the same I was at day 1. Again I'm thinking fats in the bowels as maybe there's a build-up there from only having a BM every 3 days or so... or maybe I'm just grasping at straws.

your BMI will not change unless your weight does ( http://www.build-muscle-and-burn-fat...I-formula.html )
You BMI cannot decrease if your weight doesn't and it will increase if you gain weight.
so this is all connected and logical.

All I can tell you stick tot he plan , drink your water and excercise as much as you can ........ my weight is all over the place but I am slowly and steadily getting towards my goal. For me big losses often lead to bounce backs and are very discouraging. Just hang tue and you will get there one baby step at a time. Don't get all caught up in the numbers in any area. Scales suck tape measures do too sometimes ......... but focus on how your feeling ........... where's your energy level? Are you feeling clearer minded? Are you ahhpier knowing your doing something for yourself??? Take stock of everything and my guess is you'll find your amazed with the differences even when the numbers don't reflect it.

                Keep on keeping on ..............

Re: Gained alot and didn't cheat!

In one week my weight will fluctuate 5-7 lbs. It's all about what I did that day. But there is always a lower number than ever before mixed in there and as long as I see that number and lower ones I am happy. Muscles fill with water during the rebuilding phase. Sodium levels can cause water retention too. TOM can affect me up to 3 weeks. Because I am so close to goal, I know that my losses will slow down drastically. The less you have to lose the slower it will go. I'd say, from experience, only worry if you've not lost anything in a month. A stall is considered 6 weeks with no loss of inches or lbs. Are you measuring? I had a few weeks where I lost not one pound but shed 10 + inches. Just keep doing what you are doing and you'll see success.

Re: Gained alot and didn't cheat!

                    I'm sorry if I didn't explain clearly.
I have a personal electronic monitor that works like this:
"The electrical current passes more quickly through fat free tissue like muscle than it does through fat or bone tissue. The amount of resistance to the electrical current relates to how much fat-free mass a person has and their body density"

So what I was trying to say was, when I lost 5 kilos in the ten days, my bodyfat measurements on the bmi monitor also dropped accordingly. When my weight went back up, the bodyfat measurements increased again in proportion and to almost their original pre-Atkins levels. This is what shocked me. It couldn't have all been water as that isn't "weighed" by the monitor. The monitor only senses the amount of fat on my body. It seems I lost fat and water then put fat back on, otherwise my monitor would show a lower figure today.

I will persevere and stick to it though. My daughter has lost quite alot of weight though she refuses to weigh herself but we can see the difference. She can be my inspiration for now lol

Thanks to everyone for their comments

For anyone having questions on the weight loss progress, I suggest the same thing. Get back to the business of weighing and measuring foods and committing them to writing or Fitday or some other vehicle. You'd be surprised at the amount of carb creep that can occur. This solution has never failed me in over the years I've been following this way of life.
