  • i just ate a donut. yes, a donut.

yes, after three weeks on atkins withouth cheating, i just went and ate of all things a chocolate donut! i was at dunkin donuts, where i go every morning to get a coffee, and with my coffee (which of course i was careful to add one splenda too - yup, one splenda, but go ahead and give me the chocolate donut!) i ordered a chocolate donut.

    why did i do this?

i think it is because i am so frustrated right now. after 2 weeks of induction i lost 6 lbs. this was okay, except seeing as how i started at 277 i was thinking i'd lose more. then after another week, i haven't lose any. i weighed myself this morning, and the scale wass at 271 once again. really, i haven't lost anything in two weeks, because the 6 lb loss was halfway through induction. then there's been nothing since.

i had my TOM, it came, went, but no, no loss after that.

i haven't cheated at all until the donut this morning, of course.

i have been drinking a TON of water. in fact, other than the 1 cup of coffee i have in the morning, the only other thing i drink is water. i am definitely drinking at least 100 oz. every day.

and, for the past week, i have gone to gym everday and done an hour of excercise - ellipitical and bike.

so what could i possibley be doing wrong??

at this point i guess i feel like, gee, i could have had a turkey sandwich, i could have had some apples or whatever and maintained my weight for two weeks, right? it is frustrating because i've worked so hard to stick to the atkins way of eating. and its been HARD. not drinking when i go out with friends, limiting myself to one cup of coffee (i was bad with my coffee before - i would have 3 or 4 coffee a day, so limiting myself to one is HUGE), eating only allowable foods, and making my fat butt go to the gym where every other woman is 110 lbs... for what??

i know i need to be patient... but i have done atkins and other diets before and never had two weeks where i lost NO weight. at this point i am really considering trying something else, but i'm not sure i want to do that. the most success i've ever had on a diet was atkins. 4 years ago I lost 50-60 lbs on atkins, and did it in about 6 months. i never stalled like i am now, and to be quite honest, i didn't exericse and i didn't stick to the diet as strictly as i am not - i ate atkins bars, sugar free candy, low carb products, drank wine and alot of coffee, etc. this time around, i really have been as "clean" as possible.

well, for three weeks anyway. and now... a donut.

it is so frustrating when i see all of your great results... and i can't help but be a little jealous. i mean, i'm a BIG girl... i'm 5'3 and 271 lbs! shouldn't my body be wanting to get rid of all this fat? its not like i'm struggling to lose those "last 20 lbs" or something - i want to lose over 100 lbs!

the worst part is... my boyfriend started this around the same time as me. he has lost 20 lbs in 3 weeks. 20 lbs!!! and he's NOT excercising, he didn't do a "clean" induction, he doesn't drink enough water... UGH. it makes me so mad. i know men and women are different, but now i weigh more than boyfriend!!

i really need to stop rambling. i just don't know what to do.

Girl, I can understand a moment of weakness, but Dunkin Donuts? Should have at least been Krispy Kremes.

There are some very knowledgable folks here that can help but you need to give them more info. A sample of your menu for the day and your stats (how much you have to lose, how much you've lost so far..etc) Almost everyone that says they've been good has made some mistakes if they haven't lost.

And never compare your weight loss to a mans, they aren't made the same as we are and all the men I've known can just THINK about dieting and lose weight.

      Hugs to you.
Sorry about the frustration. I am sure all of us have it sometimes. I don't weigh myself often but I can feel that I do not always lose weight some times it may even go up a bit.

Have you had your menyu analyzed here? Perhaps there is something that could be changed that would help you.

Our bodies change as we slowly get older and what would have worked years ago may not work again.

You have lost some weight so it is working, may just need a way to tweek it.

Well, you ate that donut, so nothing to do about it now. Banging your head against the wall will not take those carbs away (though if you do it hard and long enough you might burn some calories ). But since you feel guilty for doing this I guess you won't do it again, so that's great

About not losing... well... Coffee can sometimes mess around with losing weight during induction. Try avoiding it, or at least not drink it daily.

But are you sure you're not losing inches? Because if you lose inches it should be ok... and this makes sense if you say you go to the gym daily.

It happens, you just can't let it get the best of you. I agree with EMMA, you should post your menu here. It can really big a help.

Re: i just ate a donut. yes, a donut.

thank you everyone. don't worry, i'm not going to eat any more donuts! (by the way bette, i live in boston, dunkins donuts capital of the world - very few krispy kremes here. that would be sacriledge!)

as for my boyfriend and his magical 20 lb loss - yeah, i know all too well that men are different than women when it comes to losing weight. it is frustrating though. especially because we are doing the same thing, except i'm doing it "right".

well... okay. a few things. the coffee. i know, i know. BUT - as I mentioned, I used to drink 3-4 LARGE coffees a day! plus diet soda. now if I have coffee, its one small coffee and i don't drink anything else except water. and tons of water.

as for my menus... i've posted on here before and i think the only things anyone could come up with as problems were the coffee or maybe cheese.

              yesterday, for example:

breakfast: 2 scrambled eggs with butter. 1 turkey sausage (organic turkey sausage from whole foods market - no added sugars, nitrates, etc - 0 carbs)

              1 black coffee w/ 1 splenda
lunch: salad - about two cups mixed greens, 1/2 small tomato, grilled chicken, drizzled with olive oil.

dinner: baked chicken breast stuffed with mozzarella cheese and spinach

yesterday was pretty normal for me, but on most days i probably eat more cheese.

perhaps cutting cheese entirely would help? anyone thoughts?

i am trying so hard not to get frustrated. i just got back from church and am now heading for the gym. thank you all for your words of encouragement!!

the funny thing is... i don't even like donuts or sweets in general. if i was going to fall off the wagon, so to speak, i would have thought for sure it would be pizza, pasta, or even just a piece of bread that would do me in! that's what makes this even more frustrating- it wasn't even worth it for me!!!!

I'll add to the "show us a menu" chorus. It could be something very simple that's holding you back.

                Edited to add...

                  It is frustrating I know

You said you lost 6 pounds in your first 14 days on induction? did you look to see what sort of metabolic resistance to weightloss that indicates according to the chart in DANDR?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Your menu doesnt look bad, are you eating enough though? are you eating enough fat? remember this is a high fat, moderate protein, controlled carb way of eating, 65% fat is what you are looking for...

Have you tried fitdaying a daily menu to see where your percentages lie?

Try cutting out the cheese for a few days, as you say you usually eat more than you posted above. It could be that you've developed a sensitivity to it. Worth the trial to find out.

Re: i just ate a donut. yes, a donut.

i have been using fitday and i'm usually between 50-65 % fat. i try to use butter or olive oil whenever i make something to eat. the menu i posted was yesterday and it pretty typical except on some days i'll snack on cheese and that is really the only place i can see where i may be off track because i don't always measure exactly how much i have.

i think i'm mostly frustrated because i did atkins before, and when i did it the first time the weight seemed to fly off and as i mentioned, i really didn't stick to it as strictly as i should have - i never exercised, i drank more caffeine than i should have, i drank wine a few times a week, and i probably ate too much cheese then, too. not to mention all of the low carb and processed foods i had then, too.

maybe i shouldn't compare this time to last time. but it is hard when you feel like you are working harder than ever and not seeing the rewards.

i am going to cut cheese and just make sure that i get enough fat everyday. i really am not sure what else i could do at this point... two weeks with no loss just seems too much for me... but i need to do something to see if it will change.

oh, and i'll lay off the donuts, too

Hi! New Englander here, too and former fan of Dunkin' Donuts, but I digress. My suggestion is that you have add a couple of snacks throughout your day. Even if it is celery and a bit of cream cheese or veggies and ranch dressing, sometimes just changing things up a bit is a good thing and it forces a bit of fat in our diets where we have been brainwashed in believing we have to cut out the fats. That and drinking loads of water and exercising (walking, dancing, jumping up and down in frustration!) might be the boost you need. After four years on Atkins, I still change it up once and a while to get by the bumps in the road. Best wishes and Go Patriots!

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

Angelcakes!!! Have you been reading my mind? I feel the same exact way. The first time on Atkins the weight flew off. Now, I lost weight the first two weeks, gained a little, and now haven't lost since the gain!! I started again on 1/2/08-so it has been a good amount of time!- and I have lost about 5 lbs total. I am sticking to the plan maybe a little too well! The first time around I ate low carb tortillas and bread whenever I wanted, drank a little here and there, and never cut back on my coffee-not to mention I ate low carb bars for breakfast and sugar-free candy whenever....this time around, cut all that out-and guess what?! It is just not working. Plus, to top it off, I have not yet fallen out of ketosis.

(since I assume people will want to know my typical menu: mock danish for breakfast, cheese snack in a.m., salad at lunch with ranch dressing, bacon, blue cheese, and chicken -sometimes a little avacado, too, some form of meat for dinner or egg omelet with mushrooms or other veggies, then a small bit of homemade whipped cream, one cup of coffee with 1 splenda and lots of water throughout.)

Frustrated here, too-but not yet ready to give up!

Sorry to hear about the donut. (but I do love dunkin donuts coffee-my favorite!). Are you planning on starting over?

                            Good luck!
