Ill give it to him. The guy is freekishly smart. He pointed to numerous case studies that show that your body is physically inable to process losing more than 4 lbs OF FAT per week (unless you are morbidly obese - as in 150+ pounds overweight) and thus when people lose weight on Atkins around 7-10 pounds a week the other 3-6 pounds is water or lean muscle. Then he pointed to more and more studies which are impressive. He then said that you CAN do Atkins and that you CAN lose weight on Atkins (somewhat faster than any other diet) but unless your willing to change your WOE for your entire life the weight will not stay off. For example if you plan to get skinny on Atkins, once you are you cant go right into eating pizza twice per week and then taco bell another two days and finish the week off with 3 days of burger king. You will gain the weight back - I can even admit to that - the weight flew back on me when I was off for 2 days after losing 60 pounds. He points out the fact that a lot of people just want to be 'normal' so they lose weight. But part of being normal is going out for pizza with friends and family .... and doing this with carbs and that with carbs ... etc. Just a good interesting read. Im glad he pointed out you can lose weight with it, but you have to adjust your life ... hmm ...

No doubt. I agree 100%. But the government and other case studies show that low calorie diets with fruit you gain the weight back much slower. Low fat diets have the same affect as low carb. The weight JUMPS back on ya.Originally posted by tammytomandgirlsI'm sorry but ANY DIET/WORKOUT/Weight loss whatever you want to call it program is going to have the same effect....

I wonder what am I doing wrong? The weight didn't jump back on.

I've been at goal for 1 year now. I still eat many 'normal' foods. Fruits, grains, pasta are still a part of my diet - just in moderation. Ask any seasoned loser here how they've maintained. Atkins (low-carb) works as advertised.
Sugar - bad. :no
Protein/fats - good. :yes

You still maintain a healthy lower carb diet. The WOE is still in your head. Go to any public school now. There are kids eating 200 carbs in one lunch period. I GUARANTEE the people who have met their goal cant do that every day without gaining weight ... unless their metabolism is INCREDIBLE.Originally posted by PerryI wonder what am I doing wrong? I stil don't understand your initial post

I have never read anywhere where Dr Atkins said we COULD go back to the way we ate before, nor have I ever heard him claiming 3-4+ pounds a week for weight loss on this WOE.
So how exactlty did he rip us a new one?? Perhaps I am misreading your post.F 41!!! 5'3" Start July 15/04

bob Greene's opinon actually fits all Diets, whether it be low Fat or low carb....
Atkins final stage of maintanence can be from 40-100 carbs for most people.
What is the final goal of atkins?
Healthy Carbs, Healthy Fats, Enough calories to sustain your lifestyle.
Don't overeat....stay away from Refined Sugar..
hmm....

I probably did not explain it well enough. My fault. Im not saying Dr. Atkins did anything wrong but the way people interpret Atkins is that you can lose up to 10 lbs of FAT per week. That just CANT happen.Originally posted by DieselbudI stil don't understand your initial post

This was explained in my original post. A LOT of people want to get to a normal size so they can be 'normal' around their friends and family. Being normal does involve eating popcorn at the movies and pizza, and parties, and cake ... etcOriginally posted by TheNewSpartanbob Greene's opinon actually fits all Diets, whether it be low Fat or low carb....

Sure. But according to Atkins when you reach goal you should be around 50-100 carbs a day. Two pieces of pizza are going to be putting you around 54 carbs automatically. See what Im saying man? If you dont then thats OK - not a big deal.Originally posted by TheNewSpartanAnd?Being normal does involve eating popcorn at the movies and pizza, and parties, and cake ...
Its about control....Sure at goal, if you want to eat it, then eat it..just don't let it creep on you...when you come to eating more junk again than healthy.SW: 325

But see this is where most people have problems, why do we have to eat when we get together with friends/family? I mean I know it's tradition, holidays and what-not but aren't these the same habits that got us here in the first place? Who says you can't go to the movies and enjoy it just as much without the popcorn and candy? It's a mindset, one we have to re-program. Take my friend for example, she goes to a nice restaurant and later complains because the portions were "small". I saw what she had and since doing this wol I have a better understanding of what healthy portions are and believe me there was plenty on her plate. I think it's a sad state if just taking junk food out of the equasion means you don't have as much fun doing whatever. Besides, who can say what "normal" is anyway? I think it's all based on personal perception and while forgoing the popcorn at movies is now normal for me it may not be for someone else. But I've decided to change my perception because I want this to be my way of life and if my friends think I'm a drag or abnormal because I won't partake of the gorging, well then maybe they weren't that great of friends to begin with. :confused31 yrs 5'8" F

A weight loss diet is really a total lifestyle change. So if you want to maintain the loss, then you can't go back to the lousy lifestyle habits that made you fat. Sure on occasion, you can eat a slice of pizza or a handful of french fries, but once that pizza and fries become a daily habit---welcome back to Fatland.
The statistics are grim for dieters...something like 9 out of 10 people who reached goal will regain their weight in 1 year----which means 9 out of 10 people went back to their lousy eating and lifestyle habits once they hit goal. Number 10 learned that keeping the weight off is a total lifestyle commitment. So if you get it into your head that you have to watch what you eat and make sure you exercise in order to keep that weight off, you're going to undo all the work you put into losing that weight.
This applies more to Atkins than to any other diet, but there's a common belief that the Induction phase is the entire Atkins plan. If I lost a pound for every "I don't think I can eat this way (Induction style) for the rest of my life" post, I'd have been at goal 6 months into my Atkins! I'm on OWL and I eat fruit (berries, melons, oranges, grapes, apples, etc.), legumes, nuts, all kinds of cheeses and dairy. If I follow the plan as Dr. Atkins wrote it, I'll be able to eat starchier veggies and whole grains. AND I'm still losing weight.
Perry, Betty, 2Big, Laura, and the other goalies can tell you: they eat "normally".

I think the problem is that people think fries, pizza, fast food, sugary/carby foods are "normal"........ People need to realize there is NOTHING "normal" about eating the crap that the majority of people eat. Fruits, veggies, meat, dairy, etc...THOSE are normal foods.Tammy
