  • reasons to extend induction?

Every post I have read has discouraged extending induction and given great reasons. My question is, Are there any circumstances or reasons when an extended induction should be considered?

I lost almost 10 lbs in thr first week of induction. Then, nada for the next. I decided to stay in induction after day 14 and started loosing good again. Only into my 3rd week and not bored at all with the food and the loss has picked up. Just wondering like the song...

"Should I stay or should I go?"

by the way, I have 100 lbs to lose to goal.

you made me smile with reference to the song good sense of humor.

as for staying on induction-- my advice, take it as a grain of salt- is to do what works for you- the book i read said you can stay on induction for up to 6 months and that a good time to get off induction is when your within 10 pounds of your goal weight.. me on the other hand... i eat LOW CARB but not induction foods. i eat anywhere from 20-34 carbs in one day... and i still lose weight. in fact, when i first went from 20-25 carbs, i lost 3 pounds! If i were you, i might pick it up to 25 carbs for a week or 2 and see what happens. if you don't like the results, just drop back down to 20! its not like you'll go out of ketosis. i stay moderate no matter what i do. i say go for it

Extended induction is mainly for those who are very metabolically resistent to weight loss.
Personally, I extended induction for too long (six months). If I were to do it again, I'd move to OWL pretty quickly after induction. You still get to lose (and many lose even more, particularly on the early rungs) and the extra food choices are very welcome.

        Re: reasons to extend induction?

I believe the main reason for moving on is to guard against cheating or falling off the wagon altogether. At the end of induction it really does seem that you have enough food choices, I felt like that too. But with the encouragement of what I read here, I moved on at the end of two weeks.

It made no difference at all with to my weight loss, but the extra food choices made all the difference in the world and prevented me from getting bored. Boredom with food is the enemy, and leads to feelings of being deprived and hard done by. From there it's only a tiny step to being able to justify eating off plan to yourself - even if only for that one dangerous moment.

          Re: reasons to extend induction?

For me, moving to OWL HELPED my weightloss. Those extra veggie carbs jumpstarted my losses again, after I'd stopped losing for a couple of weeks. Mainly it was the wider variety of food choices that made me leave induction.

Like Sally said, there's no benefit unless you're metabolically resistant and haven't lost weight on induction. However, you can stay on induction safely for up to six months, though I would have personally gone crazy if I'd tried to do that.

When you have the choice of adding in healthy new foods and continuing to lose weight, why not do it? OWL is where we learn how to eat for the rest of our lives.

the book i read said you can stay on induction for up to 6 months and that a good time to get off induction is when your within 10 pounds of your goal weight..
NOT TRUE. When you're 10 pounds from your goal weight you enter PRE-MAINTENANCE. Prior to this, you should have been moving up the rungs of OWL for quite some time, adding 5g carbs each week to find your CCLL (Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing). During Pre-maintenance, you continue the foods and rungs of OWL, but add 10g carbs each week to find your CCLM (Critical Carbohydrate Level for Maintenance).

Thanks guys! I think I am going to go ahead with OWL. Which means I gotta get my book back from my mom. Looking forward to the extra veggies. Interested to see what happens with my weight loss.
