  • When do you start burning fat?

I'm trying Atkins again, making no promises, taking one day at a time. When do you start burning fat instead of your stored carbs? I started over this morning again.

Usually two to three days, depending on how many carb stores you have left - good luck with your journey

It generally takes about 48 - 72 hours to convert from a carb burning metabolism to a fat burning metabolism. Drinking lots of water is important. Falling the Atkins plan and choosing foods from the Acceptable Food List which should result in achieving the optimal calorie distribution of fats, protein and carbs will also be critical (Duke University Study 65%/30%/5%).

Within a few days, you will notice some changes in frequency of urination, changes in "breath" or a "taste" in your mouth. Those are signs of ketosis.

      Best wishes.

Making yourself no promises can be a good thing but push yourself a little. Once you have stuck with it for two weeks you will see the weight come off and cravings disappear AND a sense of well-being.

I have been doing it since the beginning of January and have not cheated once. I have never stuck with anything like I have with this. I lost the "no promises" attitude about three days in and now I couldn't even contemplate cheating or quitting!

I wish you all the best :hug

Thank you very much for the info. I am determined this time, my hubby is doing with me. I meant I'm not making any promises to myself on how much I will lose in what time period. I did Atkins once before and had success, but did not discipline myself enough to stick with it. I dug out my book this morning and plan to read it again tonight. I also have my shopping list for tonight and have my trusty water bottle by my side. I just did not remember how long before you start burning fat.

No, actually I did sound like I was being a little wishy-washy about my approach to it this time. I appreciate all you guys on this board, you're great. :hug

I already like your attitude. Taking it one day at a time is the right attitude - just make sure you have foods for the next day. That is wonderful that your hubby is doing it with you. Good Luck.

Thank you very much. :hug I do have my food, but I wake up and think about only making it through that day. And I hid my scale. I don't need the constant reminder of my weight and how much I do or do not lose that day.
