  • hmmmm, am I in trouble? Tequila!

Last night was the first night that I had an alcoholic drink(s) in over a year. I kept my carbs very low (about 13 carbs) throughout the day to saved up for my night out. I had 2-1/2 low carb beers at 2.5% and 3 shots of tequila (under 3 carbs) I figured I wouldn't kick myself out of ketosis but early this morning I had a hyperglycemic reaction. I ONLY have a reaction when I eat sugars eg-chocolate-ice cream-cakes-cookies. Now I am worried that I'm not in ketosis anymore. My stick tested medium levels this morning but that may be due to already having ketones in my body from last night. How long do you think it will take until I know for sure weather I'm in or weather I'm out?

I also got terribly inebriated and woke up this morning with a hangover for the first time in my life. :sadblinky

My understanding is that when you consume alcohol your body will burn that first for fuel and not fat as it's primary source. I think that if you switch back to your regular plan of eating that you will likely switch back to fat burning within a couple of days. What's done is done, just keep moving forward. Don't let it derail you further.

And good luck with the hangover. That's exactly why I don't like to drink. I hate the after effects the next morning (and I hate drinking my calories!)

yep you are in trouble but only cause alohol is an OWL rung not induction.
our body will burn the alcohol as fuel and stop burning fats when it has cleared all the alcohol from your system it will resume burning the fats. It could take a few hrs or it could take longer depending on how much you drank.

When you are low carbing it takes less alcohol for you to feel the effects hence all the jokes about being cheap dates for rung 5 of OWL. Be careful should you induclge again as many many folk find when the alcohol flows the toxic high carb foods attack too and somehow jump off those platters and bowls chewing up and swallowing themselves without your asssitance :sarcasm

      Happy low carbing.

        Just adding...

Checking the ketostix to still see if you are in ketosis might not be very accurate. The ketostix tests a specific ketone body. That ketone body is chemically similar to a by-product of alcohol metabolism, therefore the ketostix might give you a false positive result.

If you want to check using the stix again, I suggest you check after 24 hours of going back onto Atkins so that way, you're certain all the alcohol is out of your body.

It's been 24 hours and my sticks are still turning red. Hopefully I'm in the clear now. I don't think I'll be having another drink until maybe my summer vacation.

2big4mysize- You are right about the low tolerance level. I was almost immobile by the end of the night. I don't even remember how I got home. A girlfriend had to drive me home and tuck me in bed. Felt like my college years were coming back to haunt me all over again.

btw- My chocolate cravings did come back a little today but I stuck to meat and veggies and green tea.
