  • This is an unusual questions, I'm sure!

    Hello All,

I am one of those freaky people who has worked at her local renaissance faire every year. This year things will be a little different because I am going to be on extended induction.

I've been on this since May 31st, and lost 10 pounds as of last Wednesday, along w/ a bunch of inches, so I know i am doing the right things. Faire, however, might be a little difficult to be able to stay within carb range. So I am thinking about that.

Also, I was thinking that with faire, I am on my feet, walking, running, and performing for almost 8 hours straight in 90-100 degree weather in a tight bodice, chemise, several skirts, knee high leather boots, thigh high wool stockings....you get the idea. With all of this in mind, should I alter my carb count during these weekends? Should I be doing any different with my eating habits during this weekends?

Thanks in advance for all of everyone's help!

    Melissa

I do farm work and also participate in events at county fairs. When we go to Antique Tractor Pulls, I'm on my feet from morning till midnight. Temperature and environment have not changed my ability to stick with Atkins.

If you have participated in these events previously, then you are probably aware of the type of food offered by the vendors. If you can think of a few vendors from which you could get low carb foods, you'll be fine. I like pit beef and simply ask for it served on a paper plate without the roll, and bottled water is always available. If you don't think any vendors will be offering a low carb alternative, then you will need to plan ahead and pack a cooler of your meals.

    Good luck and have fun!

I would say keep up with your water, take in some extra potassium and salt those days since you will be sweating heavily, and go after those huge turkey drumsticks that I always see people gnawing on at Renaissance Faires. If there isn't much else you can eat, pack a cooler. I am sure these fairs have diabetics and folks on low cholesterol diets as well. I bet these people pack a goodie bag too. No need to change your carb intake. It is the electrolytes you need to worry about. Take a potassium tablet and don't worry if you eat more salt than usual. I would resist the diet sodas those days, because you will be hot and they will go down easy. If you have a lot of diet soda, you may find yourself much hungrier all day.
I am sure you will do fine.

        Hi Melissa,

One way of getting through the day would be eating like a rich person in Tudor times.

I recently visited the kitchens of Hampton Court, Henry VIII's palace near London. One of the things that astounded me was the amount of meat that people got through in those days. The way that they ate pies was interesting too, they eat the meat and vegetables out of the pie, then threw away the pastry. Also they did not eat the bread trenchers that their meat and vegetables were served on - that was left out for the servants. They must have been very early Atkineers in Tudor times.

With that heat, make sure you drink lots of water - but not all the ale they used to drink!!

Have a great time, I am quite envious.

Although you might use the excuse 'i'll eat more carbs because i'll be doing a lot of physical activity to counterac it' i suggest NOT eating anything illegal.

See.... this is the kind of opportunity you get where if you take your own food to eat or ONLY eat allowed food at the fair, you're going to end up so much thinner at the end - due to the full weekend work out and legal foods!

Don't go to the fair thinking of it as a place with great food you can't have - go in thinking of all the fattening food those poor sods are eating while you're gnawing into legal stuff that will make you even more beautiful.

I'm with chinadoll. Fell in love with them turkey drumsticks in Disney a few years back. Me daughters said I looked like a caveman eating them but boy oh boy did they hit the spot. All I can add is, Melissa, stay focus and resist temptation. I know it's gonna be hard but pack yourself some legal cheat snacks and bring/drink plenty of H2O. Good Luck. God Bless, Joe
