  • Psyllium husks

Hi guys....I am almost finished my 3rd week of atkins and have decided to do extended induction for a while yet. I am having problems going to the toilet and have read a lot here about psyllium husks. I bought a packet today...expensive little thing....and it says that 5g is over 4 g of carb!!!!!! how can people on induction use this if that is the carb count or doesn't it matter I am totally confused but if I can't get things moving soon I will be ill. Hope someone can clarify this for me as I live in small town and trying to find flaxseed just got me long confused stares.
    Hugs

    Re: Psyllium husks

    Hey there,

The psyllium I use comes in a cylinder box (like oatmeal) and it says psyllium whole husks, zero carbs.

If your fiber has no additives it is probably 4g carbs and 4g fiber = 0 net carbs.

I think it's pretty healthy to use fiber every day even when you're feeling well...it's just really good for us all.

    I sure hope this helps.

        Hi Kehesa!
Yes it is the net carbs you are looking for after deducting the fiber. If you have trouble getting either psyllium husks or flaxseed meal locally at a reasonable price, they can be bought on line. I think in the UK, flaxseed is referred to as linseed.

I held off for a long time on going back to Atkins, even though I did well years ago because I recall the agony caused by two little fiber. By using the flaxseed meal, i have totally eliminated that concern! From what I have heard the psyllium husks work just as good.

In either case, up your water evenmore for the fiber or it can have the opposite result.

        Good luck to you!

I use them, husks, 2 to 3 times a week and they appear to work as expected. God Bless, Joe

I found it hard to swallow the psyllium husks in water without gagging so used to mix it with mayo and have it with chopped celery - couldnt really taste it at all.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Thanks everyone for your replys. So I subtract the fibre from the total carbs to get net carbs and that what I count....I am going to try using husks in the pancake recipe I found on here be nice change for brekky or lunch even.

Good idea --- great way to get in extra fiber! But be prepared, psyllium husks tend to change the texture of whatever they're added to. For pancakes, expect a moist souffle/crepe-like texture combined with that of a muffin.

If the husks don't work, ingesting a big spoonful or two of oil a day has also worked for me!
