  • Glucosamine and Weight Loss Stall?

I quit Atkins for 2 months. During that time, I gained nearly 30 pounds (insanity!). Once I started atkins again, I lost 10 pounds in 7 days. After the first week, I started taking Glucosamine for my knees. Since then (one month later) I have gained 2 pounds and can't get into ketosis. This is not normal for me. I usually dump weight at a rate of about a pound a day when in induction.

For the life of me, I could not figure out what the problem is. Two days ago, I thought maybe its the Glucosamine. This is the second time I have taken Glucosamine while on atkins, and both times the weight loss has seemed to go in reverse. The name "Glucose"amine made me think "I wonder if this stuff has sugar in it". I can't find a straight answer, but have read some stuff that indicates that Glucosamine might have an effect on diabetics.

My question is, has anyone had this kind of reaction with glucosamine? I stopped taking it yesterday and have lost 2 pounds already. I'll respond later with my findings, but I'm interested in hearing others thoughts.

It's been 5 days since I quit taking glucosamine and I have lost 5 pounds and am back in ketosis! Maybe there is something to this! Hidden carbs in Glucosamine? Hmmm.

Re: Glucosamine and Weight Loss Stall?

I have been taking glucosamine regularly for the last three months and have steadily lost 20lbs. Looking closer at Glucosamine I found that it is derived from glucose and found this statement on a website.

"Although glucosamine may have fewer side effects than NSAIDS for most patients, people who suffer from diabetes should be especially careful when taking this supplement since it is derived from glucose. It is wise to speak to a doctor before use and to check blood sugar more frequently during use".

So it could be that you are right to be thoughtful about Glucosamine.

Today I did not take my glucosamine supplement bearing in mind that it is glucose derived. I normally can manage and have been doing so daily a mile walk on the beach. Not today, my joints are really aching and I just couldn't manage the walk.

Now today has been quite wet (showers) and I know rain can cause arthritis to hurt, but it seems odd that today I really notice the aches and pains. Tomorrow it is back to the glucosamine.
