Well I just got back from my trip out of town over the weekend. It was an interesting experience. Went down with a friend and stayed at her family's house. they are ukranian so from the minute i arrived it was eat-eat-you must eat! and i was 'well i'm fine really, but I'll have a piece of chicken cuz a snack would be ok' since she really wanted to feed us supper. I could tell she was vexed when I refused the potato so she made me a salad. *sigh* I expected this since i knew what they were like before I got there. my friend's mom was so fixated on stuffing everyone full. i think she thought i was weird bringing my own food. I explained that I am on atkins to her and she was as gracious as she could be about it although the family avidly disapproves of Atkins.
Apparently someone they knew died while happening to be on Atkins and they just assumed he ate no carbs at all and attribute that to being the reason he passed. it doesn't help that my friend is a chemist, and she is the strongest believer that the guy died because he only ate protein and 0 carbs at alll. She clearly thinks ketosis is critically bad for your body and breaks down your muscles and organs, hmm according to what i read in DANDR this would be the condition od ketoacidosis not ketosis - correct me if i am wrong. i explained to them that my doctor is very closely monitoring me on the diet to make sure nothing bad happens. (my friends and parents are worried i'll get sick, though my mom is turning around on that point now having read the book)
So the next morning i had an egg and some meatloaf for breakfast and a slice of tomato. not bad considering she was trying to stuff me full of fruit. she had no idea how many carbs were in any of the foods she had on the table. I let her know this morning that the cup of oj she just poured would blow my carbs for the day. thankfully we were not there for lunch or dinner yesterday, so i was able to eat some of the food i brought with me, and eat at the feast during the evening.
(I went to a medieval event and played drums all weekend) the feast itself was ok, i ate a bunch of salad and roast pork. We'll see in the morning if I gained any weight. Maybe only a pound or so I think if at all. It was difficult to maintain the WOe with all the pressure, but my friends at the feast table were trying their best to support me even if they didn't agree with the concept of Atkins. the cook and the event organiser went out of their way to make sure i had enough food when i let them know i'm on a selective "diet" per my doctor, which was very nice of them.
So though the negativity was immensely strong, i think i weathered it pretty well, and i'll know what to expect next time i go out of town away from my kitchen. i didn't have any trouble in the restaurant today at lunch either since they had atkins friendly food on the menu
