  • Coffeeoholic

    Hi everyone!
I'm a morning's coffee lover. Since eons. I have low blood pression and without coffee I'm a zombie. I gave up so far the capucinno in the late afternoons (too much sugar in it), but I can't give up the morning coffee. Yet, Dr. A. said to give up coffee and replace it with decaf. To be honest, decaf for me is a joke. Is like watching Star Trek and capitain Kirk is played by my mother-in-law.
So, why is coffee so bad? Will I stop loosing weight because of it?

    Hey Vek-
I can relate to what you say. Coffee can trigger food cravings etc. per his book. Try weening off it in the morning. Switch to some decaf and gradually go to it 100%. Find a good decaf. I did this and then went to black rather than cream and splenda. I used to drink black anyway at times. If you do it gradually it's not that bad, depending on your situation of course. Times when I stopped abruptly I got a bad headache and was feeling sick for a day. Weening is better. I have been ok without it. I was dragging a little, but the new energy I found in Atkins made up for it. I usually drink ice water and sometimes will have a decaf. Just my two cents.
    Gook luck!

Check the ingredients of the creamer, as many contain other ingredients that are allowed on induction. Real cream is allowed!!

Here we follow the 2002 edition where Dr Atkins says
Drink only decaffeinated coffee and tea and use only acceptable sweeteners
        and
Stay out of the java jungle. Excessive caffeine (found not only in coffee but in tea, chocolate and many soft drinks) has been shown to cause a hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) reaction, which will provoke cravings and cause you to overeat. Omitting caffeine may be a big sacrifice for you, but, in my experience, weight loss often starts up again as soon as people remove aspartame and caffeine from their regimen.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Ive done atkins a million time and have always ignored the no-coffee thing. According to the book and the website he warns against coffee cause it changes your blood sugar or something and makes you crave sweets. But if you're not ridiculously weak, and you have the willpower to keep you from eating carbs after drinking coffee than what's the problem? Coffee has never made me cheat.

i need coffee in the mornings or i forget how to put my underpants on. Its fine. All it does is cause people to crave things (some people). If you can control youself enough not to eat things you're not meant to, you can have the coffee. I'm having one right now....and it is FANTASTIC!

              Re: Coffeeoholic

Thank you for your answers! Without coffee in the morning I forget how to put my pants too. And it doesn't make me crave anything. So far, I've been cheating only one day eating french fries, but that wasn't because of coffee, it was because I felt down when my new digital scale showed me 11lbs more than my old scale.
So, if coffee only triggers cravings, but I can be stronger than those cravings, I will keep on drinking my coffees.

Everyone's body is their own. It is uniquely yours and no two are alike. It is not a popular sentiment, but if you have tried coffee and noted no ill effects on your body, mood, weight, etc... then I say continue with it. This WOE is not a brief diet, it is a way of life. If you can not live your daily life for decades without coffee, then you need to be able to incorporate it into your daily diet.

                          * Caffeine can cause cravings or blood sugar spikes with some people. If you’re one of them, you should drink only decaffeinated beverages. If you don’t have a problem with caffeine, you may drink one or two caffeinated beverages a day, because evolving research indicates there may actually be health benefits to a limited amount of caffeine. However, if you have a true caffeine addiction, it will be best to break it during Induction, because any food addiction can cause problems if it isn’t taken care of. Once you’ve broken the addiction and moved on to OWL, you can carefully try adding caffeinated beverages back into your food intake, as long as it doesn’t trigger the addiction again.

I am European living in Canada as well (and no, not all Europeans use stone - only the British ones do - one stone is 14lb btw)
I wanted to say about coffee that I was (am) a huge coffee drinker. But I gave it up because I realized that coffee made me want sweets and sweets had become one of my issues. I do drink some decaf now but I did recently cut down on that because I was not drinking enough water. I entered the water challenge in June and had to drink 64 oz per day.
So I think it is not just the coffee itself sometimes but some of the things associated with coffee that *can* be the problem.
