  • Why are eating veggies important?

Curious, what do veggies promote when doing the Atkins? Does is it help with weight loss, or just promote a healthier living?

I've been doing the Atkins for a month now with good results, but reflecting back in the last past month, I don't eat any veggies at all. Which brought me to the above question.

yeh this is what ive wondered .. i have stayed away from fruit & veg as i do not know the extent of what they do when on atkins induction.
i always believed they were high in carbs so i have avoided them all together which is extremely hard as i am a vegetable freak!

Vegetables are SO important for the nutrients and fiber it gives our bodies and most have a very low glycemic index.

If you think of our bodies as little SanFrancisco trollies, it needs certain things to keep running along or else we strand a bunch of people in bad Hawaiian shirts at the bottom of Nob Hill!

On induction you should be eating 3 cups of veggies a day. If you haven't read the book yet, please do so. It has so much good information! In the meantime, here's a very good article from the Atkins site: Eat Your Veggies

Good article. So basically it is to promote a healthier living, but really doesn't improve weight loss.

What's the point of losing weight if you're not going to be healthy? Seriously, you're going to lose your weight and because you haven't learned any good eating practices to maintain yourself for life, it's going to come right back once you go off Atkins.

Good point. You are right, I did gain 60lbs after the atkins 4 years ago. I'll throw in more veggies.

this is how Atkins got such a bad rep...because people who think its a egg-meat-cheese only diet...newbies please read the book before starting this WOE...veggies are an essential part of doing Atkins right...it gives your body essential vitamins and minerals to keep your body moving...

there are nutrients in the veggies our bodies need to manufacture the compounds our bodies use to lose the weight so if you don't eat your veggies to get them you will be needing some vits and supplements and then there are those pesky body partds theat can only run on sugar and need it daily like red blood cells so if you don't give them the carbs your body will be forced to make sugar from proteins for them and when you are buring those sugars from proteins well you read your DANDR I'm sure so you know what happens.

I can't imaginedoing your Atkins without the veggies since Dr Atkins requires the majority of your carbs to come from your vegies and if you have 0 veggie carbs you can't have any eggs spices, cream. cheese or Splenda either cause they all have carbs. OOPS looks like you weren't doing Atkins while you weren't eating those veggies.

Are you not constipated? Even now when I go back for strict re-induction, I immediatel notice the effect of limited amount of veggies :anger

If your body is not getting the nutrients it might be harder to lose.

No I'm not constipated. I've been loosing weight consistently, but I know it will slow down or stall in time. I've been on the Atkins before with great success.

Hopefully, he won't ever go off Atkins, since it is a way of life, but you are correct in saying that when he reaches goal, he may start adding the wrong carbs back in, causing that pesky insulin surge and cravings....so on and so forth.
