  • going back on carbs

Hi all, this is my first post here, however I have been reading for a little while, found a lot of the info very useful.

My girlfriend and I have been on induction for the past ten week, we have been doing very well, and have not cheated at all.

My question is we are about to go on a long time booked fully catered chalet snowboarding holiday in France, the problem is that we are going to have no choose but to start eating carbs for the week as the menu will be mostly pasta and bread, we are fine with this, what I want to know is, is there any side affects to eating carbs again, are we going to feel ok?

    Many thanks,

    Craig

This is a hindsight kind of advise, but folks in a similar situation might benefit from it. If you know you are going to be in a place where Induction might be difficult to follow, then moving onto OWL and up the carb ladder would have been the best thing to do. OWL gives you more food options, so you'll be able to eat fruits, more vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, etc. And the best thing about OWL is that you still lose weight!

As for adding back carbs, if you go the "whole hog" and eat breads and pastas indiscriminately, you'll feel the effect and probably regain the weight. You might want to move onto the Atkins Maintenance phase for your vacation, which means you will be able to eat an occasional slice of bread or part of a dessert, and still remain at least on a reduced carbohydrate regimen.

You might be able to eat naturally low carb foods while on vacation, by avoiding sauces and the like.

Well, there are two ways to approach this. You can blow the diet off and eat whatever you want or you can stick with it. Very rarely are you going to be in a place where there aren't some options available to you.

My suggestion is that you eat protein and veggies, limiting the starches. Take your list of allowed foods with you, and pick out what you can eat. There are many dishes, taken as given, that are way too high in carbs, but with some minor modifications, are fine.

If you go from Induction to high carbs, you'll likely experience intestinal upset (which could be embarrassing) and it will mess with your blood sugar (which will leave you lethargic).

Not to mention you definitely won't lose weight and might even gain some back.

Now, I realize that visiting a foreign country is a great excuse to let loose and that you want to try out the local cuisine. The trick is moderation.

If you know the menu beforehand you could post it here and we can help steer you around the worst areas.

My sister and her husband were on Atkins before they went to Hawaii last spring. They got to where they were staying and threw Atkins out the window, eating fruit, bad carbs, etc. They both suffered badly with cramps, alternating diarhea and constipation, and nausea...not what they wanted to be doing at all, that's for sure.

Whatever you decide to do, whether it is to follow Atkins as closely as you can, or to put it on a back burner till you get home, I hope you have a good time!...I'm jealous!
If you do put it on a back burner, I wish you all the best in coming back to Atkins...I'm sure you know that's going to be a challenge.
