  • Caffeine question

My husband and i are both on extended induction now. We are having a discussion about the "caffeine ban".
We would like to know if caffeine consumption has an actual physisiological effect on your body, keeping you from losing weight in some way. Or is it just the risk that it will cause you to crave sweets, thus putting you in jeopardy of cheating.

    Re: Caffeine question

This is really an interesting question. I did a little research and the information at Duke university backs up Dr. Atkins claims regarding caffeine.
    They claim:
"Researchers at Duke University Medical Center have found a strong correlation between caffeine intake at mealtime and increased glucose and insulin levels among people with type-2 diabetes. "

That means for those of us living a lo carb lifestyle , caffeine may raise our blood sugar which than may create a surge of insulin which means lower weight loss. I say switch to decaf. There were some other studies I found that implied that the surge of energy you get from caffeine is actually from the little raises in blood sugar...makes sense!

    Hope this helped.

      it just makes you crave.

If you have self control you can have coffee.

I'd much prefer to control my sweets habits than fall asleep lol

          Re: Caffeine question

Yes caffeine may raise bloodsugar levels.
A recent study from Canada (University of Guelph) showed that people who drank coffee before their breakfast really saw a big spike come with the breakfast.

According to the study by University of Guelph researchers, blood sugar levels in people who ate low-sugar cereal were 250 per cent higher if they drank caffeinated coffee before or with breakfast, compared to decaf.

Earlier research has shown that, "whether you're a healthy individual, obese or a Type 2 diabetic, when you ingest caffeine and then follow that with some food that's carbohydrate-based, for a prolonged period of time -- certainly six hours at least -- your body becomes insulin resistant," says Terry Graham, professor of human health and nutritional sciences at the University of Guelph

            Re: Caffeine question

Aha excellent post, references and analysis by you fellow ADBB-ers!

I just switched totally to decaf a few days ago when I also stopped Splenda (Sherri's no-sweetener challenge) and cream. I am just as happy with black decaf anyway.

            Will stay this course!

            Thanks!

Yes, Liv, that is exactly what I was looking for. So, there is a definate cause for concern where caffeine is involved!

Is there a de-caf coffee that taste almost the same as regular. I enjoy coffee in the evenings- its a southern thing
