  • Protein isolate.......

I'm heading out to buy some tomorrow, can anyone recommend a particular brand/flavor that they enjoy best?

Also list ones to stay away from due to bad taste, etc?

I'd also like to know what some of you use this stuff for, I do have a couple of recipes that call for it, but to be honest, I've still not quite figured out exactly what it replaces.....the baking mix?

Is protein isolate the same thing as what I see being referred to as 'whey'?

on this site whey is whey protein powder but in the real world whey is just powdered leftovers from when cheese is made and has lots of carbs so don't by powdered whey.

unless you klike soy flavor don't by a soy based PP. you can by flavored PP but if you do then everything you bake has to taste like it. You need to get vanilla if you are baking sweets and plain oif you are baking saviry stuff.

Yes it replaces the flour in regular recipes bake mix has levening in it sort of like the high carb bisquick does. you can make bake mix with protein powder and recipes are on the board.

2big4mysize, come back, come back! :sadblinky

I just checked a recipe that I'd saved in a folder here for the homemade Baking Mix, and here it is: (I'm not sure where I got it, maybe this board?)

Make your own Atkins Bake Mix

        1 cup soy flour
        2 cups soy protein isolate
        2 tablespoon baking soda
        1 teaspoon salt
        2 tablespoons Splenda

Sift together then store and use as you would Dr. A's. It's much cheaper and things come out about the same.

3 carbs per 1/2 cup serving

You will note that it calls for Soy Flour AND Protein Isolate, but yet you said that the Protein Isolate replaces the flour, right? I thought so too.

This is why I'm so confused over the Isolates, Soy Flour, Almond Flour, Flaxmeal thing.

        Help, please! :confused

bake mix has levening in it sort of like the high carb bisquick does. you can make bake mix with protein powder and recipes are on the board.
as i said that bake mix has a levening agent baking soda in your recipein it. the protein poders and soy flour are replacing the flour in it think of bake mix as seklf rising flour if you will.

you can use protein powders, any type of protein powder, to make a bake mix or you can just sub them for the flour in your normal high carb stuff as long as you know it will be a little drier and rubbery compares to the normal flour relults. we have several recipes in the data base for bake mixes and i thing Naja has some in the low carb cooking school section too.

you can also substute almond meal which is ground up almonds for flour to or use it to create a low carb bake mix.

But remember - soy is not 'legal' on Atkins till the legume rung of OWL nor almond flour till the nuts & seeds rung!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

actually soy is legal if it is pure soy protein like tofu or protine isolate.

soy beans and soy flour are not induction legal as they still have the carbs from thesoy in them

Sorry 2big I meant that soy flour (which was in the recipe Lilbit mentioned) was not legal till the legume rung.

                  Thanks you guys.

Hmm, now what do I make baking mix with if I can't use the Soy Flour or Almond Flour with the Protein Isolate?

The way I'm understanding you 2big, is that I need BOTH the Protein Isolate and one of the Flours (either Soy Flour or Almond Flour) to make the Baking Mix, correct?

I realize that you said that I can substitute the Protein Isolate in any of my other pre-Atkins regular recipes for the white Flour, and that's great, but I'd really like to make a Baking Mix similar to the Atkins pre-packaged one so that I can make hubby pancakes and such with it.

I've not tried it but maybe you could use ground flax?

                    What do you think 2big?

well there are pancake recipes using just creamcheese as the "flour" there are revolution rools using ewgg and cream cheese and there are flax meal pancakes that are sort of like the harvest grain pancakes.

IF hubby needs bake mix foods then hubby needs to moiove to OWL and either do a modified OWL keeping his carbs artificially low while climbing the rungs or a full OWL. Read chapter 13 and ask hubby those questions. based on his answers he will know if it is time to move. I moved when I thouyght I wantewd low carb breAD and then I didn't really want it bu the time I got it I ask ofr it for Christmas 2002, received 6 loaves, and still have 5.5 loaves in the freezer now. SOmetimes it is just the fact that we can't have something that makes us want it.

Whatever hubby decideds to do check the recipe data base for them. I know the flax pancakes are there amd in Desertthorn's journal as hot cakes cause I typed them there.
