  • Sugar Buster & Carb Blockers & Mentors?

OK, so I was in Walmart yesterday, looking in the health section by the pharmacy. I was looking for ketone sticks and I came across a box called sugar buster. It says it blocks sugar from being absorbed into your system, has white kidney bean extract in it and one other thing.

Just wondering if any of you are currently taking any carb blockers or "sugar busters" and if you think they actually work? Any advice would be more then welcome.

Also, how does one get a mentor?!

If you could buy Skinny-In-A-Bottle, you'd have 1 of 2 problems.

    1. You wouldn't be able to get your hands on it for lack of availability because *everyone* would be hoarding it (and I'd already have some and be knee-deep in a chocolate chip cookie hot fudge sundae).

    2. If you could get your hands on some, it'd be so flippin' expensive you'd after taking one look at the price tag.

Brook, I'm just going to say that the "magic beans" comment was what I was about to use when I read the first post. I'm now disgruntled, as I have nothing witty to say.

Cajun Angel, I agree with what Brook said whole-heartedly. Even her magic beans comment *grinding teeth*

I would say that from a biochemical perspective, you actually don't WANT to block sugars. Many of them are purposeful, and without glucose being diffused into cells, the cells have no energy. Fat is being converted into energy in this way of eating, but it's still glucose as the end result. Blocking sugars or rather sugar metabolism can have some pretty funky effects on the body.

The fat doesnt not turn into glucose as the end result. The protien does. The fat makes ketones which are used as fuel instead. That would be why we are in ketosis.

That stuff is suppose to block the sugar you eat, it doesnt steal the glucose your liver makes out of the protien.

Re: Sugar Buster & Carb Blockers & Mentors?

All metabolic function is to generate glucose for cells. The ketones or ketone bodies are the resultant effect (and excreted in the urine) of the body's conversion of fat into glucose. The process of energy production requires the creation of acetyl-CoA in the cells, which is then converted through the citric acid cycle to cellular energy (ATP). The citric acid cycle or Krebs cycle and Glycolysis both require glucose as a primary reactant to generate ATP in the cells.

Ketosis is the result of the body's conversion of acetyl-CoA to ketone bodies because the production of acetyl-CoA exceeds the body's need for energy. Ketone bodies can be created by the metabolism of carbohydrate, fat, or protein. Ketones, or Ketone bodies, are not used as "fuel" for the body, but rather fuel for the conversion of acetyl-CoA into ATP. ATP is the body's cellular "fuel."

You are correct in that it's not glucose as an end result. Glycolysis or Citric Acid Cycle occurs after glucose is delivered, and is the mechanism by which the body's cells generate ATP, and by which CO2 is given off. I was simply trying to deliver a point without a biochemistry lesson.

I'm not entirely sure why fat would be consumed as an intermediary for protein synthesis into glucose, when fat synthesis into glucose is a much simpler process. The body always takes the path of least resistance to glucogenesis and consequently to ATP creation.

As to the use of white kidney bean this or that, since ingested glucose is used for immediate delivery to the cells, why would we want to block that? It is not glucose, but excess glucose (like excesses in anything else in the body) which cause problems. If someone is already eating low carb, chances are they should be leary of taking this stuff and if someone is eating the traditional american diet then I'm guessing no amount of this stuff could hold back the tide from all the problems that one is heading towards.

Woo, what an explanation lol....Well my thoughts are, my stick is purple however, when I eat one or three extra carbs my stick turns pink, so in theory, if the carbs are blocked from white kidney bean, my stick would stay dark purple therefore enhancing my weight loss! I wouldnt get the sugar busters so I could just eat like a pig, I would use it as a small aid? Maybe...just my thoughts.

                A small aid for what?

If you're being a good cajunangel, staying on plan, not self sabotaging, not treating food like a reward instead of the sustenance that it is, and not trading what you want most for what you want at the moment , what on earth do you need a "small aid" for?

                Just sayin'....

had to weigh in here... CAJUNANGEL... resist the temptation to do this thing with small aids... I believe they are a slippery slope. take one... eat a bit more.. take two eat a bit more with justification and so on and so on. You can seriously have the bet of intentions but... its really cheating in essence.
this eating plan is so simple and you don't really crave... and you will see results. SO MANY of us here have seen results by sticking to the plan.
Your goal should be to be in ketosis... burning fat for energy... the colour of the stick should be irrelavent. It has been said so many times here... but perhaps not recently... the ketostix are like pregnancy tests. in the same way you are either pregnant or not pregnant... you're in ketosis or not. the dark reading can often indicate that you are simply spilling larger ketones but concentrated. if you are drinking the amounts of water you should be its unlikely you will be registering the darkest colour on the ketostix....
So all that said to say... pink ketone is a good thing. its when there is no colour change that your are then not burning fat.

stick to the plan... don't do anything funky with as you say.. "small aides" and you will do well....
SLOW AND STEADY wins the race!

The elegant irony here is that biochem is, in fact, the very essence of all we as individuals perceive as "sexy." Oh yes! Molecular seduction of the limbic system and subsequent physiologic response cascades FTW! Mmm mmm good!

Pardon me. My inner nerd is showing. Nothing this magic bean can't cure. Says so on the bottle so it must be true!

Good pregnancy analogy on the ketostix, Eclectikat!

I think I have a headache from all of those big words. OK fine, no magic beans for me. No cheating, no short cuts. No pain no gain!

A little bit about me. I am 29, a lil piggy(which is a term of endearment for me ) weighing in at a wopping 254 lbs. However when I started atkins on sept 26th, i was 269...*gasp* So I have lost 15 lbs!!! And I'm excited.

I lost a lot of weight on atkins 6 years ago, got almost to my goal weight of 160, and figured since i was close enough to my goal I could eat how I wanted to... and subsequintly, gained ALL of my weight back. I quit going to the gym, quit walking, quit watching what I was eating, and now I am paying for it! But thats ok, the weight is coming off and I am determined to be a hot momma again! My goal weight WILL be mine, OH YES, it will be mine! OH and not to mention, I will be 30 in Dec, I am determined not to be chubby in my 30s!!!! IM READY PEEPS! Lets get this party started.

What do you mean, "What do I do?"

You do what you've been doing. You eat clean. You exercise. You drink your water. You take your supplements. You STAY OFF THE SCALE if it freaks you out after two lousy days.

                              Two days?! LOL

This isn't going to happen over night and you're not going to be rewarded every day, every week, and sometimes every month with a loss for being a good girl.

Keep doing what you've been doing.
