  • Not Losing...Gaining, in fact

OK, so this is the end of my third week on induction. First week, started same day as TOM, lost 4 lbs. Second week, no loss, no gain. Third week, I have gained 5 pounds and am now one pound heavier than I was when I started. Inches lost: 1" around chest (*sigh*), 1" under bust, too.

-I read the book. In fact, I keep going over chapter 11 and cutting out the things that could be causing me to stall. No more Splenda, heavy cream, or onions. Tomatoes less than 25 grams per day, and that's only been 2 days this week. 2 T of half and half per day max, in my morning decaf coffee. In week 2, I did have a few run ins with the heavy cream, and have realized that it's a trigger for me, especially when combined with the Splenda.
-I weigh myself at the same time every morning, right after getting out of bed and going pee.
-I exercise 6 days a week, including; walking a 3 miles/hour pace for 40 minutes or more, weightlifting 3x week for 1/2 hour followed by 30 minutes on an elliptical machine, jogging 2-3 times/week (started C25K program), and riding my bike to accomplish my errands. This last usually amounts to one long outing (1.5-2 hours) and one or two shorter outings (less than 1 hour) per week.
-I drink 64 oz or more of water every day.
-I take my psyllium fiber every day, not that it helps very much.

So, what I am seeing is that the initial 'weight loss' and my current 'weight gain' may be nothing more than the usual hormonal fluctuations that we women are subject to.

I have read the weight loss is not linear sticky. I am not throwing in the towel yet, but this is incredibly discouraging. What the heck is going on with my body?

Well, I am sure you are aware that as long as you are lifting weights, your body retains more water to help heal the muscle, so if you're sore from a workout, chances are some of your weight is water. You are obviously still losing inches, but if you are having questions about what you're eating, I really suggest posting menus. It's possible that you're not sticking to the percentages of fat/protein/carbs, or not having enough to eat... along with various other things.

I hope you end up having a whooshie tonight.

Yes it is muscles growing. Aren't you a luck one? You will look great. They weigh more than fat but they take up less room - hence the inches. Keep in up - those losses on the scale will follow.

I got huffy when I started training years ago, I was trying to get weight down to play middle linebacker my senior year. In reality, however, I added weight...but I slimmed down in terms of inches. There is something very real and very OK about gaining weight if you're losing inches, assuming that you've upped your workout regimen.

Thanks, guys. This has been a tough week mentally, because part of me just wants to feel "thin"--whatever the bleep that really means. A more reasonable part of me (and the part that keeps me on the straight and narrow, thank goodness) is trying to improve my health, so that I can enjoy a vibrant, high quality oflife.

Honestly, if I weighed 165 and had 10% body fat, I would not only be pretty happy, I would be one bad*$$ chica, right? The tough thing right now is to be fighting with the idea of skinny and weight and all that emotional junk that's rattling around in my head. Oh yeah, and I'm planning a wedding too, so no pressure, right? ;-)

Lyssie, thanks for your wooshie wishes...how do I allow folks to take a look at my fitday? I'm extra diligent with my fitday record keeping, actually. Even when it got ugly. I have been wondering how much of the gain/retention is about working out, girl hormones, etc...I very rarely feel sore after a workout, even though I am most definitely working to failure. Lucky me, it makes me love lifting! I did start a new routine this week, though, working heavier on a few days and doing several new movements.

After logging on to your fitday account select the 'Profile' tab then scroll down to the bottom where you will see a button called something like 'make my journal public'.
Click on that and you will be given a url ending something like "owner=yourname" that you can post here in a post or your signature.

Yep most probs the weight lifting. If you are going into more a weight lifting regime i would ditch weight scales and invest in body fat percentage scales. They will put a smile to your face as they did to me. I gained two bounds in my third week compared to my original weight put my percentage was down 3% on my body fat!!!

Bastet--new at this also..but did gain two this weekend back...hopefully this does not sound strange but I find I am SO NOT regular on this diet in the RR. I use to go ever day (#2) now....every three? I am taking Colace..does not help much. May try Philips tabs next (suggested by a friend)....

I agree with muscle (always gain when I work out ---)....and maybe you are a bit backed up also? That could add two pounds!

                Sorry if this is strange...

                GOOD LUCK!

Cinnamon Stick--no, I don't think it's weird; pretty sure that severe constipation is part of it, and it's the only part of this process that I feel is 'unhealthy'. I ate some malitol-sweetened candy last night; my stomach/intestines are pretty sensitive to maltiol, and it sure did 'whoosh' me--back down to 163.5 this morning (I was 167 yesterday morning.)

I was reluctant to resort to the malitol candy. For one thing, I have a history of a vicious sweet tooth, and I didn't want to make more trouble for myself, after 3 weeks of induction eating, not to mention, tossing myself out of lipolysis. However, while I found the chocolate enjoyable and satisfying, I didn't have the "Eat more! Quick! Now!" compulsion that I get from Equal or Splenda.

I think mentally, I'm ready to head into OWL. Can you believe it, the things I really want to eat and can't get enough of on induction are--tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower...mmmmm.

Thank you, Elizellen, for the Fitday help. BTW, I love the pic of you in the red hat. Beautiful!

Thank you for the compliment about the latest addition to my Red Hat collection. I try to wear a different one to each Red Hat meeting I go to (though I only manage to attend 4 or 5 a year due to work commitments so I am no Imelda Marcos in the hats department yet )

I took a look at your fitday account and your food choices seem fine to me. Maybe a tad low on your protein for the often suggested 65/30/5 ratio of fat/protein/carbs, but from what I see posted on this and other lowcarb boards many people do better on a higher fat level.

Malitol is a sugar alcohol and is found in many chocolates. you can find them in atkins nutritional products and diabetic chocolate.

                          HI
                          Have you tried flax meal?
I make a flax cracker from 2 level Tbsp of flax meal and 2 tbsp of water spread thin on parchement and cooked in the microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. I find if I eat that every day (with 3/4 oz herb cream cheese) and driink 2 1/2 L plus of water everyday things are good.

                          Good Luck
