Hi Babak, alcohol is not allowed on induction.

It is totally your choice but you need to ask yourself is it really worth it?! Your body will burn the alcohol before the fat so all your hard work and efforts for this week will be kinda ruined.

I know that some on the board have a tipple and then plan to drink lots of water and exercise hard the next day - it depends on how you really feel about it I suppose!

I class it as cheating!!!!!!!!!!!!! I haven't had anything but water in 14 weeks and for me that is a huge achievement because I love, no adore wine. But feeling healthier, fitter and wearing a wider range of gorgeous clothes is, at the moment, more important to me.

Its been hard - I am a very social girl and have been in quite a few situations where I could have given in, but my inner voice says "it's cheating!" and, well it is!

Your call, we cannot make your mind up for you. But it is cheating, its not allowed and your weight loss will be delayed. If you have a drink... whatelse may you find yourself "just having one of"?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Good luck!

I guess you need to decide if you want the booze more than the weight loss. It won't cause you to gain but could stall you for a week. I know from experience that if I drink wine it will slow my weight loss. If you do decide to drink (and I do occassionally) then spirits and carb free mixers are best as they are zero carbs. Your body will burn the alcohol for a fuel instead of fat and then return to fat burning again x

Re: Is alcohol allowed just for an evening?

I myself have been known to enjoy a few low-carb beers every once in a while, and not have it affect my progress. In fact I sometimes indulge in a glass of wine or two when my drinking buddies and I get together, and am still losing at a rapid rate.

If you stand firm and don't drink alcohol until you get to the alcohol rung, you won't regret it. I'm sure your friend will understand...

Well, everyone disagrees with me. Sorry about that. I just enjoy a cocktail every now and then, and it doesn't seem to be a problem with me.

Actually, I don't disagree with you - I do drink but knows it does slow weight loss for me. Life goes on though and you take your choices and mine is also to drink socially from time to time. x

Oops! Hope my previous post didn't sound snotty. Rereading it, it kind of does to me. Sometimes what you mean to say doesn't come out right when you put it on the screen.

                    Thanks everybody, for your reply,
I guess I will see how it goes, I would try not to drink, but if it looks creepy then I will drink a little bit, but I will burn it right away
                    cheers

Re: Is alcohol allowed just for an evening?

I have to admit that I drink 2 dirty Grey Goose Martinis a week on bowling night. I always make sure that I eat lean meats and lower fat items on that day. I do this so when my ketosis is interrupted by the burning of alcohol, my body does not try to store the fat it is not burning. I have NO EVIDENCE to back this up. It is purely a theory, but I have been pleased with my progress. I have experienced no stalls, and I am consistently losing 4-5 lbs a week. I say if you do not stall, have a "friendly" drink once in a while. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Re: Is alcohol allowed just for an evening?

vodka & diet tonic = 4 carbs & 60 Kcal. Alcohol has 7 Kcals/gram, so that's about half carb/half alcohol. My thinking = if you have an RMR of 1600Kcal or so, then 60 Kcal in one ounce of vodka (30 of which are alcohol) should be burnt off first in the very first hour after drinking. At least that's my experience. One ounce of vodka isn't very much, however, and it would be easy to overdo. But my experience is that the one ounce hits you especially hard on a low-carb diet. FWIW.

Re: Is alcohol allowed just for an evening?

I also enjoy the occasional glass of wine or vodka diet tonic but I try hard not to! In my job I have to go to a lot of events where there is alcohol and I have to mingle. People always comment if I don't have a drink so sometimes I'll take a glass of wine and then very very slowly sip it so that I'm still looking like I'm drinking even though I'm only really having a couple sips. Or I'll have something like sparkling water or just a diet coke and people assume there is a spirit in it! It works well for me but I can see where if you are just with one other person it would be a lot more noticeable! In that case you could always say that you are having a sensitive stomach day or you have a headache, cold, etc you don't want to exacerbate by drinking. I know that the best thing to do would just be honest with people and not worry about how it looks that you're not drinking but realistically you don't always want to go into it or make a big deal of it with people you don't necessarily know that well. Good luck!

Probably the biggest obstacle on this WOE not being able to drink. I have a passion for wine. But then again I am not a 'moderation' girl when it comes to drinking it. I can easily put away 3/4 of a bottle, or more if it is a social occasion. I have called this week the 'gauntlet' due to all the holiday functions I am attending. I will not cave in. One party is a work party for the winery I work for and I know some excellent vintages will be served. But hey, there is more where they came from. On the upside my wine closet is not depleting as fast. I am going to try, really try to make it to the proper rung before I cork a bottle. Then I will savor every sip.

Hope my experiance helps answer your question.
I went out with my Husband last weekend for the first time in many months. I enjoy dancing, and I am a better dancer with a few drinks. So I decided that I would only drink tequilla shots and water for the night. (No beer, no sweet drinks). I had a total of 5 shots, and a total of 5 bottles of water. I danced all night long with my husband. When we left the club, we went to Ihop where I had bacon and eggs, and supplemented my pancakes with a salad. I weighed in today and I've lost 4 lbs. So, I guess it depends on what you will be drinking, cause in the book it says spirits are allowed in moderation. But your body will burn the alcohol first, so If you are doing some activity (dancing, or whatever follows the drinks) then you will be burning off the alcohol. It tried it as an experiment and my body did fine. I've been averaging 2-3 lbs a week in weightloss for the past couple of weeks. So, I actually lost more this week than usual. I've been on Atkins since Oct. 28th and am on extended induction. I hope that helps.... Everyone's body is different tho. I know that I don't go out or drink often, so that one night was a once in a blue moon thing for me. Before atkins, I would have one or two beers every night when I got off work. They would make my hands and feet swell, and tingle. It wasn't worth the pain, so I don't have to have the beer anymore. The shots didn't trigger cravings, or cause any derailing for me.
