  • Not sure if I can continue?

So I had posted in another forum that I was experiencing some middle back pain and cramping just below my rib cage, but can't understand why.

It is still occuring, and I am going to assume it's Atkins because it started a few days into Induction for me.

I don't really want to stop, but I am not sure if I can go on.

It's getting to the point where I want to lay on a heating pad all the time.

Any ideas on what I am experiencing?

Oh no sorry to hear this. Don't assume anything. Pain going on for several days like that should be checked out. Go see you doctor. Today. I hope you feel better soon.

This has happened to me before.. For me,I'm stubborn. I didn't go to the doc. It eventually did pass and I suspect it was my gall badder re-adjusting. I'm no doc but my guess is that you are having the same. Check it out. I took aleve for the pain and it helped somewhat. It took I want to say about 4 or 5 days for it to pass for me. HTH

Never happened to me, but I also think you should see the doctor. A healthy person does not get this kind of pain from doing Atkins. You either had some pre-existing condition or the pain-Atkins association is just an unfortunate coincidence.

I'm sure I replied to one of your posts before, but can't remember which one. Anyway, my question is... what are you eating? How much fat, how much protein, how many calories, etc.?

Regarding your ability to do Atkins, the book says:
People with severe kidney disease (creatinine over 2.4) should not do any phase of Atkins unless ordered to do so by their physician. Also, pregnant women and nursing mothers may do the Lifetime Maintenance phase but should not do any of the weight loss phases of Atkins.
You should also read Fallacy #7 on page 100. I'm not going to quote it here, but it says something about gallstones and how, if you have them, you should increase your fat intake slower than other persons... depending on how you feel.

I know for fact that I have no kidney issues. Not sure about gallstones.

What is your fat intake now? You can try decreasing it and see if you feel better.

Re: Not sure if I can continue?

It does not explain your pain, but if you are doing induction (extended or not) you should only be eating 3 cups of veggies per day -- 2 from the very low-carb ones and 1 from the higher carb ones OR 3 from the ones very low in carbs. The lists are in the book. I'm not sure if you go over this, but from your menu... it seems like you do.

The best thing you could do is visit a doctor. If you cannot do this (medical insurance reasons or something else), try decreasing your fat intake and see how you feel.

When it comes to veggie I do try to keep within the measurments. I actually eyeball my measurments.

I am totally loosing weight, but you know I actually laid off on my meat intake yesterday and today as well, and so far I am not suffering with the aches like I was the past few days.

I know I should go to the doc, but I cannot get there until Saturday anyway.

Can excess protein make your kidney's hurt even if you do not have an underlying medical problem with them?

Re: Not sure if I can continue?

I'm not a doctor, so we are just speculating here... In any case, kidney problems cannot be caused by eating too much protein on Atkins (from your menu, you are not even eating too much), unless you have a pre-existing condition (discovered or not). This does not mean you are sick. You might be just fine and the pain could have been caused by something totally unrelated with your diet. If you think eating less protein helps, there's no problem doing that. As long as you keep your fat up and your carbs within limits, you will be in ketosis and will continue to lose weight.

Re: Not sure if I can continue?

                      Hey there TQR,

A few months after starting Atkins for the first time (fall 2002) I starting having pains, too... actually, they were better described as "attacks". They got progressively worse until, in March of the next year I went in to Emergency. Turns out that my gallblader was in distress. Later that week I saw the specialist and he told me that the increase in fatty food consumption put stress on an already unhealthy gallbladder. The next week, I had it removed.

Since then life has been great and I've had several successes with Atkins (my problem is I never move through the rungs properly, so gain my weight back). The only problem I have (and not often) is that, because my body doesn't process fat in the same way, I sometimes have unexpected diahrea (I'm forewarned by intestinal cramping). Usually it's after a particularly fatty meal - like bacon. But it doesn't always happen!

As I understand it, gallbladder inflamation is commonly associated with poor eating habits and weight issues. Atkins DOES NOT cause gallbladder inflamation.

So... go see your doctor and see what he/she things... you may need to have your galbladder removed, too.

                        This is awesome information...THANK YOU!

I sometimes hurt on both my right and left side. Sometimes at the same time. Did you experience this too?

It's certainly in my back right at the bottom of my rib cage.
