  • Beware!

So the shredded cheese from my local grocery store (their brand) was on sale and I bought that not thinking about it and I put a 1/4 cup in my omelette every morning - this has been going on for the past week. Well, I looked at the ingredients today and this cheese has potato and corn starch in it! I have been eating that all week The other cheese I use is Cabot Seriously Sharp Cheddar - is this okay? I checked the ingredients on that and it looks okay. Thanks, Kathleen

    Re: Beware!

Morning! It is better to check the label when you are about to buy something. Do not wait to look at it a week later.. Yes, most of the times the thing with shredded cheese is that they put starch there, so that the cheese doesn't stick together in one blob. I think it is better to buy a piece and shred it yourself. Just make sure that there is no potato starch in it.. It is a common additive in processed cheese.

Thanks Scribbler - yes, after my rotisserie chicken surprise this past Sunday (sugar on the skin) and now this I am going to be EXTREMELY careful about label reading from now on. Have a great day!

        Re: Beware!

Thank you for sharing this! I have a bag of shredded parmesan cheese that was bagged by the store. I was going to use it tonight but now I'm going to check the label first. I never would have thought they would add stuff to the cheese! Boy, you really do have to check everything...

I never would have even guessed... I assumed that cheese is cheese is cheese.

This is THE biggest issue that irritates me the most. All the hidden sugar or goofy sweeteners in practically everything. Something you pick up and figure would be safe then read the label and slam it back down on the shelf.. People at Walmart here think I've lost my mind..

Yeah, you get used to that and don't get too excited until after you read the label, lol.

Wow! I didn't know that they put starch in cheese. I thought that it was just that, cheese. I appreciate you posting this, I will pay closer attention to my cheese.

What a waste of $$ - oh well lesson learned right? Why do they have to put sugar and processed stuff into so many foods? Like mayonnaise for example. I finally found some that is sugar free and had to go to an out of the way grocery store to find it (Trader Joe's) and you know what? It's delicious!! So why does every other company that makes mayo feel the need to add the sugar? Anyway - it grosses me out to think for a whole week I have been eating cheese with these fillers, even making cheese crisps out of them! LOL - Oh well, I guess I have to find the humor in it right? Have a good night all!

Yes, they do..unfortunately. Just make sure you read the label, even whole blocks may have potato starch added.. especially the processed ones..
Fozzy you are not the only one. I can assure you I spend more time reading labels than reading for my teaching classes.

Harris Teeter shredded cheese (at least the cheddar) uses cellulose to keep the cheese from sticking.

Cellulose is composed of carbohydrates. In essence, as a rule of thumb, anything ending in -ose is carbohydrate or sugar.., i.e., maltose, lactose, glucose, cellulose, amylose(this is starch) etc.. carbs and sugars are interchangeable in their meaning in a really crude and non scientific way of speaking.
