I started Atkins 5 weeks ago. I have had diarrhea off and on for all of this time. The one day was especially bad but, that was because I had a few pieces of sugar free candy(I think). Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?

Re: Has anyone had problems with diarrhea?
Usually people tend to be on the other side due to reduced fibres..
well 2 things:
1. Are you sure there is no hidden sugar in your food?
2. Do you take a multivitamin pill every day?
Diarrhea can be caused by shortness of vitamins, and of course probiotics. Try to get a multivitamin that has probiotics in there.
My other far fetched thought would be that you maybe have an intolerance to one of the foods you eat during induction.
Post your daily menu if you please, so we can have a look and let you know if there is anything suspicious in there

Sugar free candy will have that effect. That stuff maltitol has as a laxative on many people (me included).

Re: Has anyone had problems with diarrhea?
Actually, yes. Yesterday and I was so confused. Then, I realized before the "episode", I had all kinds of abdominal cramping. Then, I realized that yeah, oops...I probably did overdo it on the almonds. Man, they were just so good. I will now be extremely careful with the almonds and know I have a trick up my sleeve for when I do need to "move things along!"

Re: Has anyone had problems with diarrhea?
The first week of induction I had diarreah every day. After the first week it went away and now I have the opposite problem. There were others who said they had the same problem.

Re: Has anyone had problems with diarrhea?
Scribbler,
I am taking a multi vitamin every day. It's women's One A Day Weight Smart. Here is a typical menu for me:
Breakfast: 3 scrambled eggs, 3 slices of bacon
Lunch: approx. 2 cups salad with toppings (hard boiled egg, cheddar cheese, cucumbers, tomatoe and bacon bits. No dressing.) some kind of meat (chicken, ham or cheesburger)
Supper: Some kind of meat (lg. helping) , 1 cup green beans
I have occassionaly had sf jello and a low carb ice cream bars from Breyers. I have been trying to cut back on these the last week because my weight loss was slowing down to allmost nothing, which I'm just glad I'm still losing.
I don't take any other supplements because it has always been hard for me to remember to take pills on a regular basis.

Re: Has anyone had problems with diarrhea?
Morning! well, I think that Ice cream is not allowed in induction. Just check the ingredients to make sure there is nothing "illegal" in it. Also check your bacon if it is sugar and nitrite free.
Do you add extra salt in your food? Sometimes diarrhea can be because of mineral deficiency. You should not have any problems though due to the multivitamin you do take.
When we change our eating habbits then our gut flora changes as well. the kind of bacteria inhibiting our gut is related to the food we eat. If you have introduced something that you did not probably eat at that much before (say eggs?) that could be a possible culprit.
Do you still have the problem?
Oh! Sometimes even increased fat causes diarrhea.. but I am not sure about if this is the case.
