  • Question regarding Atkins

Hello All! I just joined this forum and have a question regarding ANA. I first attempted ANA in 2003 and went from 262 lbs to around 235. I then stopped it for many months and gained almost 10 lbs. Finally, I made a real committment and I started ANA once more on June 19, 2004. At that time I weighed 242 lbs. I have not "broken" a single day and have been very happy. My cholestarol then was 203. This week I returned to my doctor to see my progress. I weighed 205--a loss of 37 lbs in 9 months. The problem that my chol. went to 238! My doctor did not tell me to stop ana or to alter it in any way; she just said that we will see again in 6 months time. She also said that the good chol. had gone up. I called the ANA 800 number and spoke to a rep.; he did not think that I was doing anything wrong. He only asked if I had a family history--my dad and his dad! So what gives? Isn't ANA supposed to help you lower your chol.?

This is the only program that has helped me loose weight! Everything else failed for me. I still have 100 lbs to loose and am therefore still on induction. I do not want to give it up but am under lots of pressure from my family to do so (they are worried about the chol.); since I got the news, I have had millions of " I TOLD YOU SO..."

    What do you guys advise?

Hi! I don't know if this will help you, but I found this:

Did you do a fasting cholesterol test? That makes a difference. Try not to worry so much, my cholesterol went up too, but I know I am not hurting myself.

Thank you; actually that does help. I have been eating an excessive amount of processed meats mentioned in the article you sent me; now I know to cut those out.

whow slow down a minute. We have a cholesterol forum now you might want to take a look at for some info too. If it is your Atkins eating there are many ways to modify your Atkins to lower LDL too.

you need to look at your totlal cholesterol picture. Desertthorn was told her cholesterol was too high by a company doc doing a fast review but when she posted her breakout of the values it was plain to see she too had had a rise in her good cholseterol, hers was in the 70s pushing her total over 200 and appearing to be high but her ration was under 3 which is the bottom number docs want patients to shoot for so since your HDL went up ask your doc for the total break out and see. LDL should be under 130, HDL over 40 for womenand ratio of TC/HDL under 5.

The Atkins way of eating will force your body to burn the triglycerides for fuel and it will increase your HDL through both eating and exercise. The higher HDL will help slightly lower LDL. if you have a history of Cholesterol or are a diabetic then you can make the changes in your Atkins way of eating to include monosaturated fats which lower LDL, more OMega3 foods and oils less coffee as coffee has a chem that raises cholesterol, and many other changes listed in our Cholesterol forum.

        Happy low carbing.

2Big is the voice of wisdom...if you have a history in your family of high cholesterol you can still do Atkins but have to be a little more careful in the type of fats you are eating...I eat leaner cuts of meat and use olive oil more than butter...it's just about making more careful choices and seeing what your results are in another 6mos...your good cholesterol did go up after all and your doctor did not recommend you immediately stop the diet so take those things into consideration.
