  • Low Carb Easter Candy

Ugggh! My husband & I started Atkins on Febuary 23rd. We never cheated, never had the desire to cheat, he has lost 16 pounds and I have lost 13 pounds. Yesterday, my mother-in-law gave us Russell Stover Low Carb candy for Easter. We ate it, it was really, really good! We ate a lot of it, we said that we would eat it that one day and then go back to induction. Today, I am sick as a DOG! I have the worst headache I have ever had in my life. If I make it through this day alive, I will never cheat again!!!!

Sugar alcohols = EVIL. Hope you get to feeling better. My husband & I have also learned that lesson THE HARD WAY.

You're lucky you just have a headache. Sugar alcohols are notorious for causing severe abdominal cramping, gas and diarrhea.

You've learned your lesson, so next time, thank your mother-in-law, and don't feel obligated to eat the candy.

I think the makers of LC candy put something in there on purpose. While I have never gotten a headache from eating the chocolate, I can experience terrible cramps, gas and may need to spend a few extra minutes in the bathroom.

I personally buy the Russell Stover candies and Hershery one carb bars for when I feel like something sweet BUT in moderation. If I have a Hershey one carb bar, which is made up of four little bars- I only have two.

Just something to keep in mind....

I actually heard somewhere that if you don't have the symptoms of the sugar alcohol issues (cramps bloating etc) that's a bad thing as well as it means your body is digesting the SA carbs. Not sure if anyone can confirm this for me?

I had a run in with Sugar free turtles when i was in florida (we don't have them here..though we have all the russell stover stuff and i'd been thru this with them as well LOL) I told myself i'd only have two..and i just couldn't! i had 5 or 6 and i was in agony all night! My problem with the russel stover/turtles stuff is it comes in bags..with alot in it..so i know it's in the cupboard and i can't resist. I stick to erythrol sweetened stuff when i'm really really craving (try to make it once a month) and i just buy 1 bar so once it's gone it's gone. Erythrol (sp?) doesn't cause the same digestive issues as other sa's.

After hearing the story about the woman who ate 2 low carb bars because she was hungry, and they were handing them out free at a concert they were going to...and then she tooted her way through the whole concert, probably gassing everyone behind her....well... I just don't want to take that chance, yanno? :yikes

                  I was getting a cold

Well, I have decided my headache wasn't from the candy, because I have had a really nasty cold for the past few days, so I think it was just the start of that. My husband ate way too much of that candy, he was on the toliet all night, ha, ha! (I'm laughing because he's the one that gave me the cold and he has now lost 19 pounds, nothing slows him down!)

Men are lucky that way. My DH cheats all the time doing him own low carb diet and calling it atkins. However he had less to lose than I and is now at a stall. I think eventually he will either quit or realize that my by the book diet is surpassing his and will decide to try it by the book.

I had a 0.5 gram Carb. chocolate coconut bar at the movie theatre last night, and within an hour, I was suffering from severe stomach cramps. I'm sure everyone in the theatre heard my stomach growl, and churn. I held it all in for a couple of hours, as I did not want to miss any of the movie, and on the way home in the car, all the gas was released, my poor hubby :yikes Next time no snacks, except for water, and maybe some beef jerky for the movie theatre. I learned the hard way!

Those candies with all the SA's give me the ability to propel forward without any effort on my part. Do you know what I'm saying? Stay away from them! They make you very anti-social, and not because you want to be! After eating just one...yes...just one...I suddenly became a character in an Alien movie. And I've never even seen an Alien movie! I swear something was in there ready to jump out, that's how loud my tummy was protesting. Honestly, make something out of flax goodness and in the words of Nancy Reagan... just...say...no!

I would say its not worth it anyway. There are so many legal allowed things that one can whip up, I make the pumpkin cheesecake, slice it up and freeze the squares. When the once a month craving takes over me, I take one out, top it with whipped cream and I feel like I'm cheating!
