  • Confused

Hi, I'm am new to the forum, and its great to be here. I'm on my second week of induction. I am confused by the conflicting advise I am seeing about foods you can or can't eat. I plan on being on phase 1 for 4 weeks. So maybe the "rules" are for the first 2 weeks? Sugar alcohols...I hear yes you can, and no can't OR you have to count them rather than substract from total carbs. I know the one that start with m (sorry, forgot the spelling) is not got for GI index (and digestion) but the one that starts with E is okay. So, can we use it? Low carb tortillas (3 net carbs) can we use it? And taco seasoning (3 carbs) I heard yes and no for store bought. It doesn't have sugar so I'm confused to why its would be forbidden. One cup of black coffee? Same question. So far, in one week, I've lost 5 pounds. I would like to lose 15 more. I have also had the adkins, but now I see they aren't allowed. Help!!

No - induction rules are the same for any extra weeks you decide to do after the first 2 weeks
Sugar alcohols...I hear yes you can, and no can't OR you have to count them rather than substract from total carbs. I know the one that start with m (sorry, forgot the spelling) is not got for GI index (and digestion) but the one that starts with E is okay. So, can we use it?
Some people can tolerate sugar alcohols and lose weight at the same time, some people cannot. The only way would be to try and see how it affects you, but you would have to decide if you want to take the risk
My own 'rule' for sugar alcohols and how many carbs to count for them is this:
If they give me the 'bathroom effect' then they are not being processed by my body so I can deduct the carbs, but if they do not send me rushing to the toilet then my body IS processing them and I have to count every pesky carb in them.
The result of this rule is that on the whole I dont use those products that I 'could' deduct the carbs of, as I don't want to spend extra time in the bathroom

Dr Atkins did say we should limit our intake of sweeteners to 3 servings per day, so that does limit our use of these products anyway.
Low carb tortillas (3 net carbs) can we use it?
what ingredients are in it? If all the ingredients are listed as being OK for induction then you can use them, but I think they probably have soy (OWL level/rung 6) or grains (OWL level/rung 9) so are not induction-legal
And taco seasoning (3 carbs) I heard yes and no for store bought. It doesn't have sugar so I'm confused to why its would be forbidden.
Check the actual ingredients in it to make the decision according to whether all the ingredients are induction-allowed
One cup of black coffee? Same question.
Dr Atkins did suggest we should avoid caffeine - your decision again - it might be affecting your weightlosses or cravings but only you can tell by dropping it and seeing what happens
So far, in one week, I've lost 5 pounds. I would like to lose 15 more.
Great work You have already lost 25% of what you want to lose I can see no reason for you to stay on induction any longer.
I have also had the adkins, but now I see they aren't allowed.
I assume you mean the Atkins bars - the same applies as for the tortillas - if the ingredients in them are not induction-allowed according to the foods list for induction then they are not allowed on induction.

If you feel you want to use them then move on to OWL and before too long you will have reached the OWL rung that does allow them and can use them without 'cheating'
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

      Re: Confused

Its really not confusing. Folks who don't read the book just think they can eat anything low carb and be doing Atkins.
You had a great start so keep it up. Stick to the list and don't let any one tell you that XX is okay. If its on the acceptable list its fine.
