  • salad veggies vs. other veggies

Hi. I have a question I was wondering if somebody could help me with. I was curious as to what the reasoning behind 2 cups of salad veggies and only one cup of other veggies. DANDR says that the " other veggies " are slightly higher in carb. content than salad veggies. Is that the reason or is it something else that I am missing? What I'm getting at is: broccoli, for instance, is listed in the other veggies list. It has a carb content of 1.7 net carbs per 1/2 cup. Could I not conceivably have 3 cups of broccoli a day for a total of 10.2 grams of carbs? ( Not that I would do this, I like variety.) Just wondering why we are limited to only one cup of other veggies, if not because of carb content. Thanks so much.

No, you're not missing anything. That is what DANDR states as the reason. And there truly are some veggies on that list that are notorious for being a bit of trouble for some. For example, tomatoes and onions (among others) can be an issue; so it is best not to have more than a cup at a time during Induction.

Having said that... if I could "edit" the list myself, there are a few from the "Other" list that I would move to the "Salad" list. But I'm a rule-follower, so I played by the rules. It is a great arguement for moving up to Rung 1, though... more veggies!

Very true. That is a great arguement to move on to rung 1. I guess I am kinda scared to move up. Tomorrow will complete week 6 for me and I have only lost 1 pound after my initial 16 pound loss. I think someone is holding the wooshie fairy captive. I would be willing to pay the ransom.

A lot of people say that you can restart weight loss after induction by adding more veggies. I lost more in my first week of OWL than I did on my week of extended induction. Try moving onto OWL and see how that effects you. I am having around 45gms of carbs a day now and I'm still losing at a an amazing rate! I went to the doctor today to make sure I'm not sick It's different for everyone but give it a try :3

GHB is right - many (myself included) have jump-started losses by moving to Rung 1. It is not uncommon for some to experience PISS (Post Induction Stall Syndrome)... this is when your rate of weight loss slows dramatically, even though you are eating the exact same foods that you were during your first 2 weeks of Induction. This happened to me after about a month, and the week that I started "practicing" for my first Veggie Challenge, I moved to Rung 1 and lost 3 pounds. Wow! That's the most I ever lost in one week, other than my first week of Induction. It was definitely the right move for me. I am the one who heads the Semi Annual boardwide Veggie Challenge, and there is always someone who is able to get the scale moving again by taking a week to seriously concentrate on their veggies.

Here is the link to the most recent past challenge that was held the first week in May. Take a look through it... lots of good info there! http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...challenge.html

Of course, this way of eating affects everyone on a very personal level. That being said, I had a problem getting my salad veggies in as I don't like raw foods (of any kind, exect maybe for some fruits). I joke to all my friends that my ancestors learned to ues fire about a million years ago and I don't want to take that evolutionary step backwards. Needless to say I eat my three cups of cooked veggies from the other list and have had no issues, but again YMMV.

Re: salad veggies vs. other veggies

Some of the veggies from "the other list" are higher glycemic and can in amounts really give you a bloodsugar rush. So proceed carefully is always the advice. Some of the veggies on the first list can be cooked too like mushrooms and pepper. Glad you figured out something that worked for you Eightees.

And because I love my girls - great that you love those veggies. It will be a wonderful help in keeping healthy for a long time.

Menu is looking very good. It is nice to see you spread those veggies out like that.
Yes try to shake it up by moving to OWL - really helps many people.
You can also change your work out routine a bit and see if that helps.
I think your body is a bit stubborn but if you keep feeding it healthy food like that, it will give in

I'd say more veggies also. On another note, are you getting enough calories? I know that is hard to calculate, but when I was at my heaviest (227) I was eating too little and my weight loss stalled. I upped my calories and at one time I was eating over 2,400 calories a day and losing. It's imperative to NOT eat too few calories because though initially you will lose weight, eventually you will encounter starvation mode and that ain't good. I messed up my metabolism from doing low calorie diets/yo-yoing for years in my 20's and 30's. It took a while for my body to adjust to higher calories, but eventually it worked and my weight loss continued.
