  • Hungry!!!

Ok, so I have been on Atkins for about 16 days, and I like it a LOT.

I went through the intial "induction/atkins flu" my first 2 or 3 days, but after that I've been fine- not hungry all the time, eating a decent amount of calories without having to obsessively count them, no cramps at my 'time', etc. I've been exercising at the gym with weights 3 times a week for 40-50 mins and doing cardio typically 30-60 mins 4-5 times a week also.

I lost 9 lbs as of last Saturday, but I went to a graduation party and my one and only cheat was a small slice of cake and 1/2 cup of ice cream-since then, however I feel like I've been ravenously hungry non-stop (for the past 2 or 3 days), and yesterday I was falling asleep all day. Is this something anyone else went through after they passed the 14-day mark?

I also gained back 2 lbs, but I'm pretty sure that's because I've been eating more calories the past couple days. I still try to drink my 2-3L of water and get 6-7 hrs of sleep a night, and my typical eating plan is below:

Breakfast- 7ish am- 2 eggs, maybe a sausage patty

Snack- 10am- 1-2oz of cheese, maybe 4-5 grape tomatoes if needed

Lunch- 12ish pm- 2 cups romaine lettuce, 1-2oz meat, 1oz cheese, 3 tbs ranch dressing, 2 sugar-free jello cups

Snack- 3pm- either 3 slices oscar mayer roast beef, or 2 slices with 1 slice american cheese

Dinner- 6 or 7pm- It varies; usually some KFC grilled chicken, buffalo wings, or some other form of meat, sometimes with veggies, sometimes not.

[Fitday.com says my fat to protein to carb percentage ratio is usually 75:20:5]

Your cravings/hunger could be either from the cheat (not back in ketosis yet) or from eating hidden sugars (see my comments below). Fatigue could be due to another round of "Induction flu" after the cheat.

Breakfast- 7ish am- 2 eggs, maybe a sausage patty
Check the ingredients in the sausage patties. Look for sugars (dextrose, for example) or fillers (like grains).

Lunch- 12ish pm- 2 cups romaine lettuce, 1-2oz meat, 1oz cheese, 3 tbs ranch dressing, 2 sugar-free jello cups
Check the ingredients in the dressing (it may have sugar). SF Jell-O is sweetened with aspartame which is not one of the sweeteners Dr. Atkins recommended in DANDR 2002.

Snack- 3pm- either 3 slices oscar mayer roast beef, or 2 slices with 1 slice american cheese
Check the ingredients in the roast beef.

Check the ingredients in the American cheese too. If you're having those slices that have whey and milk protein concentrate in them, they are not allowed until OWL Rung 2 (I wouldn't eat them even then, because that's not real cheese, imo).

Dinner- 6 or 7pm- It varies; usually some KFC grilled chicken, buffalo wings, or some other form of meat, sometimes with veggies, sometimes not.
KFC grilled chicken has wheat and soybeans, among other "illegal" ingredients... so it's not allowed.

I guess the buffalo wings have some sauce on them, so check the ingredients again.

And btw, you're only allowed 3-4 oz of cheese per day, so make sure you stay within this limit. You should eat 3 cups of veggies during Induction, with max. 1 cup of these coming from the "Other Vegetables", so you'll need to keep an eye on that too. Also, over half of your net carbs should come from vegetables... and this doesn't seem to happen in the menu you posted.

      Re: Hungry!!!

You cheat you do not lose. It is an upside down world here at Atkins. You knocked yourself out of the groove. Have patience to find you way back and try to stay the course as best you can. It sounds like you may be very sensitive to sugars.

      And what G said.

        Re: Hungry!!!

        Thanks guys.

I tried to eat more veggies today, and I've been drinking even more H20 than usual in an attempt to flush that sugary-sweetness out of my system... It appears to be working because after lunch today I am not quite so hungry, and I've been pretty awake and focused today (yesterday was AWEFUL- drowsy, headaches, etc). I also went to the gym last night after skipping for the weekend, so hopefully getting back on track there will help.

I appreciate the tips- I'll check on the roast beef, try to cut out the KFC while I'm still on induction, and eat even more veggies.

With regards to the cheese and dressing: I do obsessively monitor my ounces of cheese, but I appreciate the tip, and the ranch is made by a diner in my town so I'm not sure of the nutrition, but I go with 1 carb for 1 tbs. I think I'll try to cut some more of that out as well though.

Any tips on good snacks? I need something new.

          Re: Hungry!!!

I would definitely ask someone at the diner what the ingredients are in the ranch dressing. Say you're sensitive to sugar, so you need to know if any is added. 1 carb for 1 tbs may be way off if they're mixing in some sugar to make it taste "better." As far as good snacks, that's tough. Maybe have some veggies like celery or cut up bell peppers with a legal dressing? Or you could do deviled eggs? I would recommend the snack section of Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Recipes (just make sure whatever you choose is for Induction and not a different phase). Live it, learn it, love it!

Talk about a deterrent to cheating - induction flu all over again? No, thanks! LOL

I think it's so awesome that you jumped right back on after your 'cheat'. It would have been easy to just forget. Way to go!

                Re: Hungry!!!

Sour dill pickles (no sugar) are good snacks. I think someone mentioned celery with cream cheese...if you can find no-sugar very-low-carb pepperoni, some people think that's accesptable for induction. I usually "save" 1oz of cheese /day for snacking. A rolled up piece of sandwich meat is good too (watch the ingredients tho). There's always pork rinds.

Pork rinds with some cheddar and a bit of salsa (like nachos). That is pretty yummy.
Deviled eggs make great snacks too. Jerky (if you make it yourself).
