  • Beach, Family, and ICE CREAM!!

I need some advice. I have done a 14-day clean induction, lost very well, and currently I am doing an extended induction to finish losing some weight I want before going to the beach. A family tradition of ours is to go to this ice cream parlor with home made ice cream and HUGE portions at least once while at the beach. Obviously this is not Atkins friendly. I do not want to be the only person not having ice cream, and my husband is willing to split with me.....what is the "safest" ice cream flavor to get (lowest carb) they have about 50 flavors, and will a few bites ruin everything? Plus, its my birthday so everyone will want to celebrate

Sorry for going on, Its the only part of this vacation stressing me out. Other than that, I am bringing atkins friendly "desserts" and meals to have. Thanks for your suggestions

Do they make "diabetes" ice cream? If they did, that would be really great. Other than that there is not much that can be done to make this in any way acceptable on the diet. You could ask for what flavour may have the least sugar, but ......
Remember that some people may have a problem not so much with the sugar but with the kind of cravings that sugar would unleash so be prepared.

If they have an outside place to eat the icecream, you might be able to get away with brining your own? Pick up sugar-free ice cream at the supermarket or bring a homemade low-carb desert that might travel better? You could phone them ahead of time to see if they make sugar-free (diabetic) ice cream. This could be viewed as an opportunity - decide now how you are going to handle trips to the ice-cream parlor and stay on plan, for life. Or change the tradition...

In my opinion... family is the best supporter of weight loss, and i think that they will understand you taking the year off of this ice cream...
don't let it stress you out... would only make matters worse!

and hey, congrats on the "losing well"!

Sounds like one near me called The Showplace. Great sundaes and you will likely have cravings and control issues for days afterwards. Its simple. Do you want to be left out of ice cream for one night or do you want to chance blowing the hard work you have done already. Have a diet soda or a coffee and stay true. They can celebrate the vacation with ice cream and you can celebrate the vacation being with them and being healthy. Its one sundae and it is not like you will never have the chance again.

Re: Beach, Family, and ICE CREAM!!

"I do not want to be the only person not having ice cream" sorry but it sounds like an excuse to indulge to me. Would your children get THAT upset because you didn't eat ice cream? Would it cause catastrophic failure to your marriage to not split one with your husband?

It's your decision and it sounds like you've already made up your mind to cheat. Hopefully it will only be 1 cheat and you won't find something else that you just can't indulge in.

Re: Beach, Family, and ICE CREAM!!

tell em you have a tooth ach or something, that way you donthave to eat the ice cream and you dont have to hear everyone give you a hard time about 'dieting' and everything...

Or go to eat first get your low carb meal and then just explain that you are full...

but i'd skip the ice cream ..

I guarantee your family will be so proud of you for sticking with your diet. As long as you enjoy yourself and their company, no one will even notice. You're making it out to be a bigger deal than it is, I assure you (speaking from experience).

EDIT: Just noticed this was from the end of June. How did it turn out, if you've gone already?
