  • Carb cravings and Binging Help!

    Hello,
Please help me! I've been on extended induction for approx 5 weeks, and have been doing really well. However, this past week has been TERRIBLE. I've been having uncontrollable carb and sweet cravings in the evening. It's almost hypnotic, where I my mind is completely out of control. I've been breaking all rules of indcution and indulging in all sorts of illegal sweets (bread, chocolate, candy, ect). I feel so guilty and horrible afterward, and I'm starting to self-sabotage my progress. Is it a good idea to take a break from induction? Also, what is recommended during those times of carb cravings, especially in the evenings? Would it be better to consume a handful of nuts (almonds/walnuts)?
Please help. I'm in need of some good advice from all those who have experienced similar situations. Just would like to know that I haven't ruined everything.

As FYI: I excercise regularly, 4 to 5 x per week: Olymipic Style Lifting, weight training, cardio. Have been doing so for the past 3 years.

    Thanks for all your help!!

You need to figure out what triggered the cravings in the first place. TOM and hidden carbs are some of the most common reasons. Caffeine, a cephalic response to artificial sweeteners and even not eating enough (given your activity level) are others you should consider.

At the moment, since you've been indulging in bread and sweets, you are out of ketosis and that's what causes cravings. The only way to break the cycle is get back to a clean Induction, just as you did when you began Atkins. Write down a list of why you want to lose weight and keep that list with you and read it whenever you're under carb attack.

You say you need something to munch on at night, so I guess that's just mindless snacking. It's better to stop the habit and eat only when hungry (or 6 h have passed since your last meal), but if you really need to eat something then have "legal" Atkins snacks around, not chocolate or bread. I suppose you are not living alone and that's why these carby foods are in the house...

If you are bored with foods, move to OWL immediately after Induction and then you can add more veggies, diary and so on to your menu.

BTW, how much weight do you have to lose? What are your stats? Male/female? Age, height, starting weight, current weight, goal weight?

I cook up chicken nibbles if im in need of a snack.
And a good way to tell if you should eat a snack is asked yourself 'Are you hungry enough that you could see yourself eating a plain hard boiled egg with no salt.' if your not, then your not hungry =].

It took me awhile to get the grip of atkins too, its really hard for some people to start so don't think your the only one. You just got to believe in yourself, sounds cheesy I know, but imagine being at your goal weight and buying new clothes.. Its so much better than a silly piece of bread at night.

Jump up and down naked - feel the wiggle. Is sweets really worth it? Tell yourself you can eat anything if you can eat it naked in front of a big mirror but only then.
            Go for a walk.
            Eat something legal.
