  • So much carbs in spices??

Ok I am surprised and a bit distressed! I love spices, and just realized that according to fitday, one measly tablespoon of curry powder has 3.7 carbs, cumin has 2.7 grams and paprika has 3.8 (but this one I understand because paprika is a pepper in fact).

So is fitday wrong? how do you guys calculate your carbs for spices?

If you add a tablespoon of curry powder to a recipe, you have to add all of the ingredients carbs together and then divide by the amount of servings. So if you have 1 tbs at 3.7 carb but the dish serves 8, then the carb per serving for the curry is .46

Yes I know, but usually I do add 1 tablespoon for 1 portion....I guess I'll have to get use to less spicy food for a while.

Your nutrition facts are stating total carbs, not net carbs. In the US, total carbs minus fiber = net carbs. In other countries, nutrition facts may already factor in the fiber, and labels will state the net carbs. In the US, nutrition facts list total carbs and fiber separately, and so fiber must be subtracted in order to determine net carbs. The figures you are using in Fitday are for total carbs.

        For example:

currry powder does have 3.7g total carbs, but it also has 2.1g fiber in that serving, making it have a total of 1.6g net carbs

Cumin has 2.7g total carbs with .63g fiber, for a total of 2.07g net carbs.

Paprika has 3.8g total carbs with 2.6g fiber, for a total of 1.2g net carbs.

I imagine that it can be quite confusing to try to count net carbs accurately when you are not in the US, but are using Fitday, which lists total carbs rather than net carbs. You can set Fitday to count the fiber for you, though.

If you haven't gotten Fitday to count fiber for you and you want it to, this is how you do it: On the left side of the page, is a place that you can click on to set a nutrition goal. Go there, and set a fiber goal... that is done by setting a minimum and maximum daily fiber amount. It doesn't matter which numbers you plug in... I have my minimum set as 1 and my maximum as 50... the numbers there aren't important. I just put them in, to get Fitday to count for me. After doing this, the fiber grams will show with the other totals for carbs, protein, fat. Just subtract the fiber grams from the carb grams, and you have your net carbs.

Here's a handy Spice Chart from Linda's Low Carb. It shows total and net carbs.

I use the PC version of FitDay. It calculates carbs, fiber and net carbs so when I'm looking at my meal log I can see the those figures as well as the totals for the meal and day.

                  Thank youMizski!

I print it out, so I can refer to it easily.

I love spices and used them in almost all my dishes.
