  • Do I need a gym to exersize?

Looking for advice on what kind of workouts are out there that don't require a gym. Do any of you have a routine you do without a gym and you are seeing results? I have lost 80 pounds and I am on a push to lose the last 50. Exersize wasn't a part of the first 80 but I want it to be a part of the 50. The only catch is that I don't want to have to go to a gym to workout. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi there,

I simply walk, run mainly. Also I have bought weights and a bench for home.
I have lost half my goal in 4 weeks.

I don't go to a gym and workout at home using various DVDs (Walk Away the Pounds is very good for cardio), resistance bands, dumbells, and a hula hoop. I also use the Wii Fit and Active for fun and variety in my workouts.

In addition, I use the fitness resources on SparkPeople. They have wonderful free tutorials and little exercise videos. You can also select for SparkPeople to design a strength-training workout with accompanying tutorials/videos. SparkPeople is free.

I don't exercise in a gym, either. I walk outdoors, ride my bicycle outdoors, and use exercise DVD's. Here is the link to a great site that allows you to view a clip of each DVD so you can decide what you might like: www.collegevideo.com

Here is a sample of my DVD library:

Re: Do I need a gym to exersize?

I do like the gym. I go to a community one. It has all kinds of people in there and I like the classes it offers. I suggest even if you think you do not like them to give them a try some time. Most gyms will allow you a free trial. I think with exercise it is a little bit like food. We don't know what we like till we have actually given it a fair chance. And exercise is going to be a good friend so finding something you like and exploring all the possibilities are good things. Anyways think about it.

But home exercise and outdoor exercise are just as good if you do it for sure. I have many videos, weights, bands and mats at home. And some days it is good to do. I did the C25K learn how to run programme and I now do running as a cardio exercise. Many running stores offer running classes some even for free if you check around.

Start slow and build up. There were tapes I tried in the beginning that were too hard. But there are some that are just great. I also really would recommend Walk Away the Pounds for a starter. That is were I began and it is great stuff.

Dumbbell Exercises from Sparkpeople on YouTube - It is 20 minutes and a good one to start with
I want Six Pack Abs, Core Exercises - lots of core exercises.

If you do not have weights check yoga and pilates or flexibility and strength exercises that uses gravity. A resistance band can be handy to and easy to store.

              no gym membership here either...
I am using the Nintendo Wii for my main structured workout, but after almost 3 months I have tuned it to be what I want it to be... but.. The EA Sports Active program is the best one on there!

Also, I am still trying to walk/run every other day on top of my morning workout

okay.. so.. after 60+ days on using the EA Active, I have now went over to "MY Personal Fitness Coach" for the Wii as well.. and WOW! Its a nice change and I really am digging this one..
still no gym membership and now this one is really helping me target more core muscles and also is helping with the cardio end...

plus i have started a regimine for running at least 2 miles every other night

Re: Do I need a gym to exersize?

Some great advice here. Mine would be: find something you enjoy. Try everything you can think of, even stuff you don't think you'd like. Exercise, just like your new diet, needs to be part of your life from now on. Try everything until you discover what you really like to do. Be adventerous, try new things until something clicks for you and if you are lucky maybe you'll find a hidden passion you didn't know you had.

I use a couple of DVD's at home and then I do walking. I take also in zumba classes at the nearby community center, but next week is the last lesson. Actually I only have had just 2 lessons due to the civic strike...

I have a zumba DVD with Beto Perez, and Jillian Michaels' 30-day shred. The latter is more efficient, but at least some workout is better than nothing, and I just LOVE to move to the Latin American music

I don't have a gym membership. Soo expensive.

I just LOVE Zumba. I use the DVDs and hope to try a class when I get thinner.
