  • Extended Induction: does it do you any good?

Ok, so im getting ready to start my second week of my 14 day induction. Ive read a few threads and some people are reporting stalls, or hardly any weight loss. So is there anyone here who has lost weight continually on the extended induction at all?? I really want to keep going since I have a lot of weight to lose. and I know the scale isnt the best indicator so I guess I mean I have a lot of inches to lose. And I just want to make sure if i'll be getting more results sticking to the extended induction or not.

Ok I just read dug deeper in the older threads. So I will check out chapter 13 and answer the questions after my induction and decide. I dont mind sticking to induction but one thing that I would like more of is more veggies maybe. i think im not eating enough protein or fat though so maybe since im more full during induction i'll be fine maybe??

Re: Extended Induction: does it do you any good?

I would suggest that if you are feeling a lack of veggies (3 cups is not a lot to a veggie eater, is it?) that a move to the first level/rung of OWL would be a better idea rather than staying on induction.
You can stay on that rung for a long time if you like and even add more than the 5 net carbs of veg over the weeks, so you are not feeling deprived of them.
Many of us tend to eat lots of veg, which always makes me chuckle when non-Atkins-literate people (like the trainer at the gym) say they could not eat Atkins as they think that no vegetables is unhealthy

Depending on your CCLL you might find you can lose weight on many more net carbs then 20-25, so maybe plan on moving partway up the OWL carbohydrate ladder so you can add yogurt/milk, nuts and berries before too long. I could quite happily eat only from rungs 1-4 without adding most of the rung 5-9 foods!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Extended Induction: does it do you any good?

For some, it can help. Dr. Atkins explains in DANDR who might benefit from extending their Induction (DANDR 2002, Chapter 13, p. 160):
People with high metabolic resistance can benefit from doing Induction longer because it gives them time to correct metabolic imbalances they may have developed over time. These include insulin resistance, blood-sugar imbalances, carbohydrate addictions and allergies.
The problem is that many people abuse Induction and continue doing it longer than necessary, thinking they'll lose weight faster than if they moved to OWL. This is not the case --- many people discover that adding 5 g net carbs of vegetables to their Induction menus actually accelerates their weight loss. Of course, as you get closer to your CCLL and move higher on the Carbohydrate Ladder, your weight loss will slow down. But it will slow down anyway because you will have less weight to lose than what you started with. Besides, knowing your CCLL will only ease your job in OWL, so you should not be afraid of reaching that number; once found, you simply stay below it and you will continue to lose weight.

Moving to OWL or continuing Induction is a personal decision and, if you haven't already, read/re-read Chapter 13 in DANDR 2002. The questions and explanations there will help you take the best decision for you, instead of doing something simply because it worked for X or Y.

I'm happy with it. TECHNICALLY I've been stalling for weeks according to the scale. But I don't really care cause I'm losing inches and feel great. I'll gladly take that "stall" anytime.
        What I do:
Elliptical gym machine 1 hr Tue-Sun
At 320, switch to cycling on my Trek 500
        2 filtered containers water/day
        Daily salads/veggies

        Goals:

Stop needing High Blood Pressure meds - DONE!
        Workout in a XXXL shirt
        - DONE!
        Workout in a XXL shirt
        Workout in a XL shirt
        270 on the scales

Re: Extended Induction: does it do you any good?

I completely agree with everyone's take on the matter. I've been on extended induction for well over about 4 months and have seen a huge difference in my clothes as well as the definition in my abs -- and still do on a continuous basis [even though I do cheat every now and then ]

The real WEIGHT I lost, however, was only about 18 pounds (8 kilograms), which isn't the best weight loss rate out there as far as diets are concerned. What is established, however, is that I used to wear size 36 jeans tight and now I can snugly fit into a 32 pair in some outlets.
