  • Going to bed hungry

I know that many people have talked about the importance of going to bed somewhat hungry. I know that when this happens it means that you're going to be losing weight overnight. It's funny that I have been able to do this and just 'can't be bothered' to get a snack because my carb cravings aren't there. I love Atkins.

Do you go to bed somewhat hungry?

I usually eat dinner around 7:00pm and bed time recently has been 9:00pm LOL. I have a newborn and need all the rest I can get! I haven't heard about going to bed hungry.

I'm the same, try to eat 6-7ish, then bed by 9, so not really hungry at that point.

I heard that on Oprah but I don't consider her to be a diet authority.

Going to be hungry usually means that:
        1. You probably didn't eat correctly during the day and
        2. You will have trouble falling asleep

I've never found going to bed hungry to be a precursor of weight loss. What I have noticed before I drop a chunk of weight is that I have to pee more often than usual but that has nothing to do with hunger.

There are a lot of dieting suggestions out there such as "don't eat after 4 pm (or 8 pm or whatever time)" meaning that the chances are you could be going to bed hungry. They are very popular with the low fat and low calorie diets. Been there, done that. Now I don't have to.

I would not go by what other diets say to do. Just go by the book and the Atkins WOL. If you are going to bed hungry you may try eating lettuce or an egg or 2 or something before you go to bed. Going to bed hungry just means your body wants more fuel not that you are losing weight.

            Re: Going to bed hungry

I'm normally too busy exercising in the evenings to eat before 9 or 10pm so I could never do this. But sometimes I think I eat too close to bed. But hasn't stopped me losing.

No, I would never go to bed hungry. The good book tells us when you're hungry - eat! I have my main meal for breakfast, eat small amounts frequently throughout the day, have a salad with lean protein for dinner and a protein shake at 7pm after my workout.

Works well for me and I'm NEVER hungry...no matter what time of the day it is.

                Re: Going to bed hungry

Going to bed hungry is dangerous. My partner tends to sleep walk in the night and walks right to the fridge, especially if she takes an Ambien to sleep. I can't control what she eats and she doesn't remember, so I just hope its Atkins friendly (why I keep loads of atkins friendly snacks in the fridge).

I try to make sure I am pleasantly satiated before going to bed. I eat at 7pm and asleep by 10:30pm.

                  Re: Going to bed hungry

                  I agree with posts. If you're hungry...EAT!

I usually have dinner around 6/7 and then a nice cup of hot decaf herb tea around 8 or 9. There are some AWESOME flavors out there and it tends to stop any sweet cravings I have for this time of night and it's soothing and filling as well.

But if you're hungry, make a quick salad or have some celery sticks.

                  - Best to you.

                    Re: Going to bed hungry

I never go to bed hungry because I'm trying to watch my blood sugar levels. Hungry at night results in high morning numbers. I usually eat a boiled egg or a piece of cheddar cheese right before bed.

                      Re: Going to bed hungry

I wouldn't think that this is ideal, nor the way Dr. A intended you to eat. I would think that going to bed hungry could increase overwhelming urges to eat, which could cause some people to cheat.

I never go to bed over-full, but I do go to bed not hungry...this very well may be because we eat around 7 pm and go to bed no later than 10:30pm, but I also continue drinking water after dinner.

                        Re: Going to bed hungry

I sometimes go to be a bit hungry, but never VERY hungry. My rule has been if I start feeling hungry and I plan to be awake for more than an hour, I eat something small. If I start feeling hungry & am planning to go to bed in the next hour or so, I ignore it. This is not SERIOUS hunger...nothing that would keep me awake at night. Also, I have never snacked in the middle of the night...just not an issue for me.
