  • Restaurants/Gain/Very Disappointed

    Hello all,

Last week I was ½ # away from my Second Mini Goal of a 30# weight loss as of my Monday weigh-in. I checked out the scale Friday am and I was still at 229.5. (Hoping to soon see 229.0). And let me say I have not yet had a gain since I started on August 10, although I have been slowing down each week.

Today I am at 235!!! But I think I know why.

First of all I know I didn’t gain 5 ½ # since Friday am. I had two restaurant meals this weekend. Saturday I met a friend at TGIF for lunch. I ordered a small Caesar salad, and had the flatiron steak and broccoli. Yes, the steak was very tender, but I didn’t realize the steak would taste like it was soaked in seasoned salt for 2 days!

Sunday met my Mom, Sister and Niece for a Birthday lunch for my Sister at Chili’s. Had a Caesar side salad, bun less bacon cheese burger, and again broccoli. I even brought a serving of clouds with me in a little container so when they ordered dessert, I could still have a dessert, too. I have had to bring desserts even when we get together at my Mom’s on Sundays because my family, although they are 100% behind me and supportive, they feel a little uncomfortable when they eat foods that I am not. I always bring my own foods to her house.

Anyway, I brought the clouds so I could enjoy a dessert and they could also enjoy their dessert. BTW, none of them have a weight problem.

So back to my Disappointment!!! Both days I was on track the rest of the day. So I guess if you eat some restaurant meals, it will take a few days to wash out the sodium! It really does not help checking the Nutrition info online either. TGIF only lists a few, and both Chili’s and TGIF bunches the whole meal together, so if you want to know what a burger info is, the info provided includes the side as well. So it is a little hard to break it all down.

So let me just end this by saying even though this huge gain was probably just WATER, I still am deeply upset!!!

I know how you feel. Weight gain is not fun even when we know that it is water retention. I retain water with salt too and if I eat extra carbs - about 4 lbs just like that.
But I think it is important to eat at restaurants and do a few things like that. We need to learn how to live in the real world and with practice we get better and making the choices that are right for us and that works for us. So we have to do that too.
Chilis has a make your combo selection on their menu - that is where I am ordering from.

Good point Liv, And again, it would be helpful if the Nutrition Info was broken down better, not clumping the whole "meal as served" on the website. I guess we can just hope in the future. Problem is the restaurant association fights putting too much info out there, because it would scare too many people away. And the government regulators are very slow in helping out the consumer.

You know, I also stay away from Ceasar salads in restaurants -- I am always concerned that their commercial dressing could be exceedingly high sodium and additional carbs (not to mention they usually have croutons - and i like croutons lol). I order a house salad and get oil and vinegar on the side. Although you might not count calories (i find that i must) - you probably had a pretty good calorie count in those meals. So adding all of that together -- I agree it will take a couple days to flush it thru, but you should be ok (or close to it). Restaurants can be a challenge for sure!

Ooooh, restaurants, aka: frustration unlimited !! You never know what you're getting, I usually enjoy the home cooked more, and then the sticker shock comes. Home BBQ's are so much safer...

Thankfully, you know this is water and it will pass

            Thanks Liv, Allegra 15, Kntrylady,

Most days when we visit family, I try to bring food that we all can eat. Or sometimes they all order out, and I bring my own snack and meal for the visit. It is so much easier to control when you cook your own. The problem is, you have to go out sometimes, and just hope what you think are the right choices will actually be the right choice! Couldn't miss my sister's birthday party!

And yeah, that Caesar salad can be tricky! At least I say no croutons! (And I sure miss them!)

                Thanks Julie,

I just didn't expect such a BIG reaction from these foods. I guess I will have to watch my "social calendar" a little better and never do to restaurant meals in one weekend ever again!!! LOL.

BTW, you are doing Great! Congrats!
