  • Post surgery medication & Antibiotics

    Hello

:help Has anyone got any experience that can offer me support with the effects of taking antibiotics taken after surgery?

I am going in for an Op tomorrow and as a precaution I will be given a drip with antibiotics. I am really worried that this is throw all my hard efforts out the window, and the thought of it leaves me totally gutted and bewildered.

I think I can avoid having a Glucose drip by discussing this with the anaesthetist but I don't think I want to risk not taking antibiotics...

In anticpation of some feedback thank-you

I have no advice to give you as I have not needed anything like that but I just wanted to wish you well for tomorrow. :hug
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

the antibiotics will keep you safe and you really really don't want apost op infection laying you up so just go with it. Many of our Memebres have had outpatient and one that i know of even had cancer surgery while doing her Atkins. they all lived to tell about it and were more concerned about the lack of activitiy then the antibiotics. Some antibiotics can cause fluid retention but that will be gone as soon as they are stopped. there are a very few that effect blood glucose and they are clearly labeed. you have told them you are doing low carb and they will be watching out for you.

        Will be praying for you.

        Have a safe recovery!

          Thanks 2big4mysize

Thank-you for your words, I did not get the chance to respond to you.

Surgery is now over, quite a bigger op than anticpated, pelvic floor rebuild with a perferated bowl. Had no glucose drip, but still on antibiotics.

You are abolsultly right, no way do I want a post op infection, it's been a big stress as it is. Lack of activity concerns me, I have to be very careful, no lifting etc...and boy is it sore between my legs! :grumble So I'm not running for a little while yet

The antibiotics are making me very sick and I am having to take 2 types which is a bummer (or one up the bum :yikes !). Whilst in hospital I had no carbs, felt to ill to even consider foods. I only managed to eat tiny portions at the end of the day of just small peices of white fish, never more than 200 cals a day in total and 0 carbs.

I'm still in ketosis much to my joy but not so joyful I have gained 2 pounds, so as you said "some antibiotics can cause fluid retention but that will be gone as soon as they are stopped", so I hope that it is the case because it can't be fat :nono. Additionally, its TOM is a few days...(hopefully anyhow).

I'm looking forward to finishing the medications and getting back into normal eating routines as I can't eat much at the moment.

Hope alls well in your world,
          Sally
