  • What is The Gold Standard???

Ok, just for some background, my hunny and I are working on getting rid of our Candida Albicans after a month + of her stalling and me not doing so well. (and we hadn't changed what we ate, water we drank, or exercise we performed when we were losing consistently)

We're using the book for reference and I've been reading up on the Candida forums where people keep mentioning The Gold Standard diet as something to do that is Atkins friendly AND really kills off excess yeast in the system. It seems to be Induction with a twist....

I've searched all over and can't find any websites that really talk about it. Sure, there are Amazon copies of tapes etc, but nothing that says what it is other than a high fat, low carb diet.

I admit that I haven't read the book cover-to-cover for fear of overloading my little mind with facts I don't need to know yet, but is this something that Atkins talks about?

Any additional info would be helpful. Thanks!

    Huh? Am I missing something?

The Gold Standard Diet is a low fat diet. From the description of the book from Amazon:

Dr. Charles Attwood believes that the future of our children is at risk. His solution? A low-fat high fiber plant-based diet that reduces the risk of chronic disease in later years and establishes the right habits for a lifetime of healthy eating. Bad eating habits are a foundation for illness and chronic health problems especially heart disease. Fat and cholesterol can (and should) be replaced by fruits vegetables grains and legumes to lay the groundwork for a long and healthy life span. Dr. Attwood discusses whe ther our diets are getting better whe ther school lunch programs are adequate and how to take charge of your nutritional future

Hmmmm, didn't see anything that said low-fat, but thats interesting. I wonder if the Golden Standard talked about in Candida forums is the same thing or something completely different.

I plan on reading the whole book, but right now I'm trying to get through the chapters that apply to where I am and where I'm about to be. (attempting to move several hundreds of miles away, look for work, lose weight, exercise...its a lot on my plate to be reading and truly comprehending a book along with it)

Since you are complaining about slow weight loss... you might want to post a complete menu, with quantities and net carbs for every food, and then we can take a look and see if there is anything that can be tweaked there.

Are you carefully counting your net carbs? Tracking everything you are eating? Being 100% on plan?

How much water are you drinking?

and we hadn't changed what we ate, water we drank, or exercise we performed when we were losing consistently
That might be exactly why you have problems losing...

I see... probably not the same stuff as what they are selling on Amazon. I'm not sure...

Re: What is The Gold Standard???

Well, the stall is her most immediate concern and I think eliminating the dairy is going to help her with that, but my biggest concern is the other symptoms we've been having. The sinus congestion, the exhaustion, the itchiness (I could rip my scalp off most of the time and I use special shampoo and conditioner for it and don't use any other products), the digestive issues, etc.

I'm not overly concerned with WHAT we're eating in terms of the stall...we've done Atkins many times and we have that down pretty well...its the other issues that have popped up that have made us think of the yeast connection and what we can do to reduce it.

If it weren't that so many people keep talking about this golden standard diet and how its connected to Atkins I wouldn't have thought twice, but I thought that perhaps its mentioned somewhere in the book that I haven't seen.

Re: What is The Gold Standard???

I've heard "Gold Standard" and Atkins ... and it can mean "by the book" ... no products ... focusing on "whole, unprocessed" foods.

                    <<we've done Atkins many times>>

Wouldn't it be better to only do it "once" ... to stop the yo-yoing?

Barrnone, I have, several times, which was why I wasn't sure why people keep talking about "the golden standard diet"

J - that could be it, but odd way of putting it.

As for only doing Atkins once, if that worked for everyone there wouldn't be a single person here on the Second Time Around Club, every diet would work every time, and there would probably be much less diet stuff out there. I would have loved to do it only once but I'm human and I've made mistakes....you?

You've only made one mistake in your entire life? Wow. Only one diet in your entire life and you've stuck with it. You should write a book...then remember that the rest of us are merely falable humans and a little compassion and understanding would be more appropriate than comments like "Wouldn't it be better to only do it "once".

Re: What is The Gold Standard???

Bella - I am truly sorry if you feel that you're being attacked. I have found that there are certain people on this board who seem to do just that - rather than provide concrete information. The threads on this forum do give some good information on Yeast Intolerance/Candida Overgrowth. There is even a link to a computer test you can take, as well as a 'spit test' to determine if this affects you.

You can definitely do this. I went on the Candida diet about two weeks ago. I will tell you -it's been HARD!! I really miss my cheese and salad dressings. The upside is that my tongue isn't fuzzy anymore - and I am losing weight.

                            Good luck to you! {{hugs}}

I have found that by googling "Candida Diet", I was more easily able to find information on what to do/not to do. Basically -It's Atkins, with no dairy, no vinegar (which includes salad dressings, olives, pickles, etc), no mushrooms, no hard cheeses. Basically - nothing that could potentially harbor mold - thus feeding the Candida.

I've learned to simply ignore those that won't/can't be helpful, and choose to be confrontative, instead. I am human. I've been on Atkins three times, so far. Do I want this to be my last time? Of course!

Since this comment was made in reply to my post.........

Every time you go off the Atkins bus, you are likely to slow down your metabolism. Every time you cheat, you are likely to slow down your metabolism. This could explain the problems you are having with losing weight this time around. Plus, you are older. Plus, as you said in one of your previous posts, you are eating "Induction-ly". Of course, there is nothing wrong with eliminating certain foods from your diet. But then you should make sure you are following the plan correctly, not allowing for a bit of this and a cheat of that... because every time you do this, you are only making your job more difficult. And yes, getting back on track after a cheat is definitely better than being off for months/years, but it still does your metabolism no favor.

Unfortunately, I don't have the universal recipe for making Atkins a lifestyle. Everyone needs to find his/her own.
