  • I'm soooooo depressed

I finally did the ketosis test this evening on my 26th day induction,I admitted that I made mistake once on a while, such as drinking unsweetened cocoa which is 0 carb,I know I'm not supposed to do that,I didn't expect that I'm still not in ketosis after 26 days eating no more that 20g carbs.

I'm soooo depressed,is it something wrong with me? I was crazy about starchy food in the past, and I've been a vegetarian for 16 yrs before I started Atkins Diet,is it possible I just have too much sugar in my body so it takes me longer time to 'transform'??

I feel useless as I've heard many people lost 20-30lbs during induction but not me.I'm eating licorice now,I wanna give up,nothing i can do...you guys are awesome but not me.

Have you lost anything? Weight or inches? How do you know you are not in ketosis? The sticks don't always show you. When do you test with them? What is your daily menu like? There are things that can mask ketosis from showing up on the ketostix. WHat low carb products are you using? Where did your carbs come from? Have you seen your breath smell differently? Change in urine color or smell? Loss of cravings or appetite? These are all signs of ketosis too.

Not that I encourage cheats, but that cocoa is not the end of the world. Just wait until OWL Rung 3 to have it.

Also, cocoa is not 0 carbs. I don't know what cocoa you used, but according to the USDA database, 1 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa (processed with alkali) has 1.55 g net carbs.

I'm soooo depressed,is it something wrong with me?
What is your aim: changing the color of the ketosticks or losing weight? The two are not necessarily related, as Jill pointed out.

is it possible I just have too much sugar in my body so it takes me longer time to 'transform'??
No one needs almost 4 weeks to get into ketosis. If you followed the plan correctly, you should be in ketosis by now... even with that cocoa you had. It's likely that you simply have no excess ketones to spill over in urine. It doesn't mean your body is not burning primarily fat for fuel though.

I feel useless as I've heard many people lost 20-30lbs during induction
      Where did you hear this?

And why do you care what others lost? It's not a race between you and them... and losing X lbs in Y weeks is not the measure of success on Atkins. Do you have a copy of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)? You should re-read Chapter 12.

Also... the less weight you have to lose, the less you will lose during Induction. To put your weight loss into perspective, it's a good idea to calculate the percentage of weight lost from the total weight you needed to lose when you started.

Did you take body measurements too?

      I'm eating licorice now
      And how will this help?

Pity parties are fun once in a while, but Atkins-friendly snacks should be served.

      Put the candies away now.

Unsweetened cocoa is bitter stuff. Did you sweeten it? Did you use milk?

Looking back at those 26 days you have been doing a lot things you should not. You have to work the programme for it to work.

What is your motivation for losing weight. You need focus.

          Re: I'm soooooo depressed

It is always easier to throw in the towel than to look and see where it is that you could have gone wrong. I think with having weight to lose, we all have learned to do denial well. If it be oh just this one won't hurt me, or nothing works so I give up...You have to remind yourself what brought you here in the first place.

There is no weight info on your post so I'm not sure how much you have to lose but it is slower the less you have to lose usually. I haven't lost anything in the last little while (on the scale) but if I give up now and make excuses then I won't stay the same or lose, I'll gain. That is why I've had to tell myself this isn't a DIET this is my new way of life, or I'm sure I'll gain what I lost and add more to the total then before like every other time that I have tried a "diet".

I've spent years looking at thin people and think how come they can eat like that and look like that... and if I ate half of that I'd gain five pounds. Really If I think about it, sure they are thin but are they HEALTHY??

If this is something you really want to do, take the advice and cut the things out that could be making you slip, you can do it!!!

          highest weight 360lbs
          started atkins 315lbs
          current weight 295lbs
          first mini goal 275
          second goal 250

          Induction started Sept 30/09

Going to succeed, one day at a time!!!!!!!

            Re: I'm soooooo depressed

            hi,
i have ketosis sticks at home, and they turn almost black!! I'm on medications so this may contribute to it. The fact that mine chage colour could have no more to do with me being in ketosis than yours not turning..can you honestly say that you have been doing everything right durning induction? are you eating the proper veggies on induction? I just learned lastnight that if i ate a cup of onions, it's about half of my allowance of carbs on induction!! CRAZY!!! have you been exercising? are you checking for hidden ingredients? If you give up where will you be three months from now?? 20 pounds heavier and trying another program?! so why gain those 20#?? move forward, give an honest look at what you've been doing over the last 26 days. exercise, lots of water, lots of the proper veggies. a person doesnt get fat from living on lettuce...so the carbs and garbage that make us gain weight come from somewhere. you might be making honest mistakes that are hindering your weight loss. Keep at it!! you wont regret weight loss, but you will regret weight gain. good luck, keep at it.

All you know for sure is that one time when you peed on a stick, you weren't spilling excess ketones.

That doesn't mean you're not in ketosis.

It does mean that you have enough hand-eye coordination to pee on a stick.
