  • Having trouble eating enough

I've decided to do an extra week of induction, but I've been tracking everything I eat and I've just realized that I don't think I'm eating enough!
I'll have my 3 cups of salad a day.
Usually some smoked salmon for breakfast (I'm not a big breakfast person as I have clinics in the morning that can be pretty grusome)
Lunch will be tuna mayo with peppers or some meat/mayo/salad
Supper usually some grilled meat and salad sometimes with a cream/cheese sauce I make myself.

But my calories are working out about 900-1000 calories a day. I've tried upping the count but I'm stuffed! maybe my stomach has shrunk these past 2 1/2 weeks but I really cannot fit any more food in!

I'm not feeling any ill effects, I'm drinking enough water, not feeling tired...do you think this is a problem? If so any suggestions?

Yes, undereating can be a "problem".

It's certainly counterproductive on Atkins ... and often leads to stalls.

Are you tracking your food in Fitday or something like that?

What exact quantities are you eating?

What's your 3 cups of "salad"?

Salad would consist of 1 cup of rocket leaves, 1 cup of raw spinach and 1/2 cup of pepper or another 1 cup of rocket.

Portion - tuna 1 can, chicken 1 breast, smoked salmon 2 slices (50g) etc

Do you know how many net carbs a day you're eating? Exactly?

Looking at my diet tracker, its ranging from 8-18 carbs a day depending on whether I have leeks that day. I never realized that I was actually going under on the 20 carbs before.

Are those net carbs or total carbs?

How many are coming from vegetables?

8 carbs... net or not... is not enough, imo.

Are you saying that if you don't have leeks you don't have vegetables?

Why not give us an example of what you eat ... exactly ... over a few days.

                Re: Having trouble eating enough

I found that restricting my carbs too much in induction was counter productive. I felt bad and I know that it slowed my metabolism, making it difficult to exercise. I at least tried to meet my basal metabolic calorie intake (minimum calories required per day) otherwise Id go into starvation mode.
If youre having trouble getting enough carbs on extended induction then maybe take the step and go onto OWL 1.....from what Ive experienced you have nothing to fear from extra veggies.

                  Re: Having trouble eating enough

The carbs are completely from veggies, its more carbs when I have leeks because the other vegetables I tend to eat are mushrooms, spinach and salad leaves which have lower carbohydrate contents. I'm quite limited at the moment as to what vegetables I can buy as only so many are available in the student shop (I'm planning on sharing an online order to a supermarket next week with some friends so this should improve).

The problem is that I just feel so full all the time, it'll come round to 7pm and I last ate at 12 but I'll still be full!

It does sound like you need to eat more. To get more calories, you could increase amounts of mayo, sauce, oil in cooking, etc. If you like cheese, that is quite high calorie.

I find that if I start preparing some food, especially something cooked rather than cold so it smells good, then I definitely want it by the time it is done.

Your ticker says only 10lb to go, but the weight in your details is different, which is right? Either way have you thought about moving on to OWL rung 1 rather than staying on induction? If you add another 5 net carbs of vegetables to what you are eating now, it sounds like you still would not be over 20 most days. If you eat more, you might actually be a bit hungrier (weirdly).

Sorry if it's a bit confusing, my ticker is more of a mini weight goal - to finally be in the "normal" weight BMI, the target of 148 is my final goal but I thought I'd be more motivated if I saw that ticker get closer to the end!

I've been snacking on small amounts of cheese and i've been sticking to higher fat meats for the past 2 days which seems to have upped my calorie intake! Also I've eaten alot more salad vegetables - lots of mini meals seem to work for me better than 3 large ones.

Ordered my online shop today! So fingers crossed - lots of induction friendly veggies and tuna and all things atkins arriving to my door on wednesday!

I went for a jog today and I managed to eat more than usual for dinner - so maybe it's just that I need to be more active?

                      Thanks again for the help

You're ordering vegetables and tuna on-line?

Probably grocery delivery from a market like I do sometimes. It's nice when I don't want to drag the kids out to the store to have the store come to me! Ah, the joy of metro-area living!

By all things atkins, I mean a bigger variety of induction friendly veggies, meat and cheese than I can get in the tinsy tiny student shop. Not atkins bars and what not, I'm fully aware of their ability to stall you! Also they don't seem to sell them here that I've seen.

The nearest big supermarket is about 3-4 miles away, and I don't have a car, fortunately they deliver! So I've stocked up for a few weeks - my freezer is going to be bulging! Also, asparagus was on offer...and conveniently salmon fillets, I'll be making some home made hollandaise tonight I think!
