  • So if you cheat....

...how do you know if/when you are out of ketosis? Does it take a couple days? How many?

Sorry but I've been having HORRIFIC nights at work and I got home Friday night and had too much low carb ice cream. Yes, it was low carb but it was a binge. :no

So today I got right back on the proverbial horse but my sticks are light and I'm feeling....bummed. Disappointed in myself. :no

It depends on how many carbs you've had during said eat-a-thon.

Still, now that you know you had ice cream because of uber-stress, this is the time to address ways to attack said uber-stress and turn your evening into one of uber-happiness through other means!

Eating as a conditioned response to emotion is one of those naughty things that got us where we were pre-Atkins.

Now that you hold the power in your hands (the power! muahahahahahaa!), you can elect to plan ahead and decide how you will condition yourself to respond to situations such as emotional eating response differently!

I know you can do this, girl. You've worked too hard to not keep on keepin' on.

You're so very right. I know I need to plan better!!!!

To be honest with you, I was feeling fatter too, like I was gaining and I hate the scale so much that I wouldn't get on it anyways so I kind of wonder if I just used the stress as an excuse you know????

You will probably not go out of ketosis...

I have had 2 times where I cheated and the stick turned light pink, but I never went out of ketosis altogether.

You do know that low carb ice cream isn't allowed until the dairy rung of OWL don't you? Just because you are following the Extended Induction doesn't mean the Rules of Induction go out the window: so no dairy other than cream, cheese or butter. If you want to have that stuff, then move onto OWL, where eating low carb ice cream isn't a "cheat".

As for how many carbs you can eat before you're out of ketosis, there's a name for that number: the Critical Carbohydrate Losing Level. It's a highly individual number, which is why Loonatika can eat over 100 net carbs daily and still lose 1-2 pounds a week and I can eat up to 40. So until you move onto OWL and find that number for yourself, it's impossible for us or you to know how many carbs you need to eat to stop the weight loss process.

Are you still on exnteded induction? Because I'm thinking that the no carb ice cream is an o no. Anyway, don't worry, I myself have been known to *ahem* somewhat cheat under pressure. I think what you should do is avoid the foods you can't eat at all costs. Is your pantry and kitchen totally atkins friendly? When you go out, stay clear of the food you can't have, just looking at them will make you have cravings. Also, don't forget the exercise.

boy are you lucky usually low carb icecream over eaters are posting from the bathroon as that stuff has some very very volital in the intestinal SA that reacts to cause bad gas and diarrhea.

as to being out of ketosis you are out the momment the sugars get into your bloodstream and rasises your blood sugar level high enough to evoke an insulin response. Insulin stops ketosis dead in its tracts. and the fats have to stay in the fat cells the dietary fats have to go to the fat cells and you are sugar burning until the blood sugar level gets low enough to evoke the hormone glucagon to come out which runs in a negative feedback cycle with insulin. This shuts of the insulin production and as the glucagon starts working the fats come out to play and be broken down for fuel again/ Since the ketones already present in your blood got nowhwere to go while you are a sugar burning non exerciseing person they just keep swimming a long in your blood stream with a few getting burned up here and there until you gome back to fat burning and ply up the byproduct of fatburning whren there is a log jam of Aceyrel CaA and that would be ketones.

if a pewrson was dark perple before they went on a bender of high carb foods you could still show moderate ketones the next day even though you aren't burning fats for fuel any more which is why we always say stix can lie!

If you car going to pig out with a comfort food which i wouls not advocate doing use a high fat carb free one or very low carb one like the blobs or ziplock baggie icecream.

As to your stress comemnts the answer is yes your Brain is a very marvelous filer and knows what foods you have eatten in the past when you werre stressed that caused you to "feel" better as many mnay foods evoke comfort memories or can mimic neurotransmitters for a while giving you relief. Chocolate is a great one for stress releif. But you know what exercise will yse up every hormone stress creates in a possitive mammer and burn cals for you and give you some cool calming brain chens too. so grab some exercise next time work is getting to you just a 20 min walk artound the block will sufice!
              Happy low carbing

Yeah, I know it's not allowed. :sadblinky It was a bad binge, plain and simple. Stress induced.

As far as the low carb ice cream, it was fabulous. Made with spelnda...it was Edy's?

                (Smiley from my son): :yikes

Are you saying that you can have a carb blow-out the day before and still have the same colour Ketostix???? (ie pink/purple)

Oh geez, and here I was trying to move on and not feel guilty because I thought I hadn't put my ketosis out of joint.

how long you are out of fat burning mode will depend on your metabolic rate, your actuasl activity level after you cheat and what you actually cheat with. but when you eat carbs they are converted to sugar and sugar needs insulin to proces and ... so up you messed up.

SInce you are going oin just continue doing your Atkins and rememeber not to do it again is all. there is no penacne for eating carbs so just go forth returned to your Atkins eating.

                      Happy low carbing.

if its not in your fridge you can't eat it right? ditch the ice cream...you are using it as a crutch and we are trying to break the bad habits that got us there in the first place...that stuff will just keep feeding the cravings make it just that much easier to slip and cheat again.

I agree -- try to figure out why and break it.

With my son .. of course I have foods in the house that are not allowed. And in weak moments I look at them.. smell them.. then grab a big glass of water. By the time I finish the glass I am over the craving Just have to think it through sometimes.
