  • Metalic taste

I have a metalic taste in my mouth. I suppose it's from being in ketosis...

    Anybody else get this?

What to do about it? I brush my teeth, but that just seems to make it worse.

The good thing is that my GF said I don't have bad breath (I asked her).

    Any suggestions?

        DR Atkins suggested chewing parsley!

I think I am the only one at the local cafe who actually eats that sprig that they add for a garnish

Brush teeth & floss - check. Actually seems to make it worse (or maybe I just taste it more).

Drink more water - I'm drinking almost a gallon a day - everyday. I actually have had two cups of herbal tea this month, otherwise ALL I've had is water.

Veggies, could be an issue, but I'm in the range of 2-3 cups a day.

Chewing parsley. Hmmmm, I missed that in the book. I'll have to give it a try.

          Thank you all very much.

            Maybe more would be better?

Or do you believe that an extra 5 net carbs of vegetables will be bad for you?

What veggies are you eating now?

              Re: Metalic taste

I'm in my second week and I am also getting tired of the way my mouth tastes. My mouth isn't metallic though, it's a really sweet taste. Yesterday I had a little bit of unsweetened seltzer water and it actually tasted like it was sweetened. I had to have my boyfriend taste it to assure me that it wasn't actually sweet. I haven't found anyway to get rid of the taste other than just constantly drinking water. I guess maybe we'll just get used to it? Good luck!!

                    Re: Metalic taste

I was also drinking about a gallon/day when the metallic taste kicked in. At that point I'd been in ketosis for some time according to the sticks. It was like I'd been licking metal all day - blech. I increased my water and added just a tad more veggies as advised and it went away. The added veggies did not kick me out of ketosis.

I did buy parsley but forgot about it in the fridge... ooops.

It's not that I'm worried about the extra 5 net carbs, it's just that I'm not much of a veggie eater normally, although I do like salads.

Therefore, I mostly have been eating lettuce. I also like stir fried garlic & brocolli and saute'd green beans w/bacon, which I have both of, a couple of times a week. I also have saute'd mushrooms too sometimes but that's about it.

I really don't liked steamed veggies... although I've been toying with the idea of making mashed califlower "potatoes".

Honestly ~ I don't know what other kinds of veggies to make.

You need to work on changing the normal then... because there's no way to make Atkins a lifestyle without moving to OWL... and to move to OWL, you want more veggies.

I mostly have been eating lettuce.
Salad does not need to be lettuce. You can add to it some cucumber, peppers, tomatoes...

Maybe you want to try cauliflower pizza?

Have you tried pumpkin? You could make a MUP (I'll be back with the recipe in a few minutes).

Or you could make a quiche with veggies.

MUP is a name that one of the members gave to a recipe I came up with... it stands for Mitzi's Ultimate Pumpkin. I have even been dubbed the "Pumpkin Patch Princess" by another member (and she gave me a really cool graphic saying that, for my siggie).

About the pumpkin - I use Libby's canned pumpkin that is probably located next to the baking items in the grocery store. Make sure to read the label carefully so that you pick up the 100% pure pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling, which is also made by Libby's and looks a lot like the pie filling, which has sugar in it. Here is the recipe for what I eat:

In a bowl, I mix 1/2 of a can of pumpkin (which is .88 cups) with 2 ounces of cream cheese. I put this in the microwave for 1 minute, then take it out and stir well. I then add a few drops of liquid Splenda (just use sweetener of your choice), 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, .5 teaspoon of allspice, .5 tsp. of nutmeg, and stir. Once I passed rung 3 in OWL (seeds/nuts), I started adding 1 ounce of almonds, which is about 22 nuts that I cut in half (so I can have 44 nuts ). I then put it back in the microwave for about 40 seconds, stir, and it is done. As Ev indicated, it can be eaten warm or cold. Beware, though! This concoction contains 15 net carbs. So anyone who doesn't want to use up that many carbs can leave out the nuts and/or cut back on portion sizes of the ingredients. I ate it for a long time without the nuts, and it is good that way, as well. It does have a high fat percentage because of the 2 ounces of cream cheese, but I don't stress over that. Lots of people get by with only 1 ounce of cream cheese, but I like how creamy it is with the 2 ounces. This makes a pretty big bowl, too, so you may not need to make this much. My husband always talked about how good it smells when I make it, so I made it for him one day. He couldn't finish it all because it is kinda rich. Cutting this in half would have been enough for him. I always finish mine, though.

The recipe "works" without nuts, too. Personally, I'd wait with the nuts until OWL Rung 3... since they are a problem food for many.
