  • Dunkin Donuts Low Carb Bagel

    So i got this problem.

My nice mother knowing that i'm on the atkins diet bought me two low carb bagels from dunkin donuts today.

I was like cool and ask her how many carbs and she was like "I don't know" so i checked on dunkin donuts website and under nutrion they called it a
    Reduced carb bagle
45g of carb and 14g of fiber, making it 31g of carbs, ouch!!!

I don't want to be a bad son and tell her to throw them away.
Does anyone know if the dunkin donuts carb bagels are that high in carbs?

Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions. They're not an induction food at all. I guess it's your decision, but I'm sure your mom would like a nice bagel served to her by her son!

People really don't understand Atkins, so they think they are doing something nice for you. You should print out the acceptable foods list and give it to your Mom so she will know what you can eat.

There are a lot of things out there that say they are low carb, but they are not. I saw some Carnation low carb creamer the other day, it had 3 carbs per serving compared to the regular half & half that has 1 carb!

My husband is on a business trip, he went down to the continential breakfast in his hotel. They have bagels there that say they are low carb, 14 grams per bagel!!!! He just sticks to the boiled eggs.

        she doestn care

My mom doesn’t really care about this diet, she hates that I’m on it.

not that she hates eating healthy and loosing weight but she doesn’t understand all this rules and the fact that different food has to be bought at home and also since every week night she cooks dinner she has work around my diet.

I offered that I would cook my own dinner when I get home but she never listens.

She also always temps me to eat other foods, like she is eating pizza and would ask. “want a piece”

The bagels are unfortunately wasted whether they are tossed out for the birds or end up being ingested out of guilt.

Might as well feed the birds!

Well, as a mother of two grown children, all I can say is that she loves you and means well. A lot of us mothers love our children with food, that's what our mother's did to us and we are just carrying on the tradition!

I just looked on the DD site also and they call it "reduced carb" not "low carb". Their regular bagel has over 60 carbs, so I suppose the one with half of that would be reduced.

Here is what is in it~

Ingredients: Bagel [Water, Enriched Flour (Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Ferrous Sulfate, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Modified Wheat Starch, Vital Wheat Gluten, Bleached Soybean Fiber, Wheat Protein Isolate, Soybean Oil. Contains Less Than 2% Of The Following: Inulin, Salt, Yeast, Dough Conditioner (Datem, Ascorbic Acid, Azodicarbonamide, Enzymes, L-Cysteine Hydrochloride), Natural & Artificial Flavor, Sucralose, Degermed Yellow Corn Meal, Potassium Sorbate And Sodium Benzoate (Preservatives), Sunflower Meal], Topping (Pasteurized Milk, Cheese Cultures, Salt, Enzymes).

I'm with Cleo. Give it to the birds and they will be happy.

I am old and my Mom still insists on giving me food to take home. I take it to work or throw it out. I would like her to understand, but at nearly 80 years old it ain't gonna happen.

                I didnt eat it

Well I didnt eat it, i was trying to find the bagels last night and was going to take half by half of them in my lunch stuff to work and then do what you said, feed it to the birds.

I was going to tell my mom that they have to many carbs and i will eat it in pieces.

If your mom is feeling inconvienced about you being on atkins, try to explain it to her in this way:

If you were a diabetic, you certainly couldn't have sugars. Well on Atkins, you can't have more than 20 carbs per day... plus everyone could use more veggies in their diet.

You could also try to encourage her to read the book, maybe if she understood how atkins worked, she wouldn't be so opposed to it.

But give her big hugs and kisses for the bagel and then watch the birds enjoy it

When I read this I thought it was really important to point something out. I know you are all currently in induction (and your husband was very wise to stick with the boiled eggs!), HOWEVER you will not be in induction forever and I think it's very very important to your success to keep this in mind. You will move onto OWL, PreMaint and Maintenance and your daily carb intake will rise. I'm currently in maintainance and can have up to 100g of carbs a day (that's with exercise, everyone is different) so that bagel that says it's low carb? Well it is in a different phase. Now if they said it was 'induction friendly' they would have been wrong. But low-carb? Yes it is.

I think that having an open mind and knowing that one day you may be able to eat alot of the things you currently would never consider is very important. If you have the mindset that this is the way you will eat forever, and not considering OWL etc I think you are setting yourself up for failure. I used to see things like that bagel and knowing I could most likely hvae it one day was kind of a goal for me. Gave me something to look forward too (and i just couldn't wait for the fruit rung!) Remember this is a WOE for life and there is more than one phase and much more variety soon to come.

As far as the pressure from your mom, I've been very lucky that my family have been very supportive of my woe, but I can imagine how difficult that would be. I agree with the advice that you should try to get her to read the book, or even have her read the 'why atkins works' page of atkins.com to help her understand.

                      Good luck!
