  • Question about smoked pork chops.

    Hey everyone,

I bought some smoked pork chops, thinking that it would be something different to try.

I had one for breakfast and about halfway through eating it, it dawned on me that they might have used sugar in the processing of it. I never asked!! Does anyone know how they smoke pork chops and whether they are atkins friendly?

I sure hope they are safe as I have two more!!!

Re: Question about smoked pork chops.

if they were smithfield smoked pork chops they are 2 carbs, with 2 sugars, so 2 net carbs. If they were hormel it says 0, but i'd count one to be on the safe side. According to fitday a smoked pork chop is 0g carbs.

No there was no list of ingredients because they were smoked at a store that does their own meats. They smoked it themselves. I might just have to go and ask the butcher. I just wasn't sure if they add sugar to these things usually.

They don't taste sweet, but you can never tell sometimes. Especially since they are salty.

It all depends on the store but when I smoke meats at home I used to use a dry rub with sugar in it.

since a rub with salt and sugar is designed to draw the fluids out of the meat and really doesn't move the sugar and salt inside the meat you could wash it off before eating to avoid any.

Now if they use that nasty injector machine before they smoke it then you got the sugar and salt inside and nothing can be done to remove it.

Okay, had a reaction to it, and gained two pounds. Hmmmm not good! Will drink lots of water to flush out the sodium and possible sugar intake that I had with them. Good to know for future ventures. Thanks for all the responses.

Sorry about your experience, but this is good to know as I get all my meat from a neighborhood meat market. Although I haven't eaten them in a while, this includes 'marinated' fajitas and chicken breast and as I was wanting something different than my latest fare, had decided to visit them tomorrow. Now I will check to see what everything is marinated in AND what their sausages are made of as I have a hankering ...
