  • Ugh, that was a mistake

So I have been working on a project at home, I am wall mounting my television, but since i work till 8, i have been going to be late...

So this morning i decide to have a cup of coffee (black, 1 splenda) Generally, I love coffee, but i have not had it since i started atkins (3 weeks ago this past sunday).
Coffee would sometimes give me some heartburn, but never enough to stop me from having it (wasnt having it daily, maybe 4-5 times week). Half way through this cup, i started feeling real crummy in the tummy (haha, wasnt trying to rhyme) tossed the rest, now its almost an hour later and still dont feel right.

Any way, i have stopped taking tums b/c of the sugar (or so i suspect that there is sugar). Does any one have any suggestions for this (used to drink some milk if tums weren't available, but i have no dairy products here at work...

I'm interested in the replies you get as I suffer terrible with heartburn (suspected hiatus hernia) and although I have been having remegel I'm sure there is sugar in it as its so sweet, great if there is an alternative.
Great question, hope you get some answers.
    Best wishes

Are you sure Tums or one of the other chewables does not have a sugar free variety? For some reason I no longer suffer from heartburn but I did a year or so ago and remember getting sugar free chewables.

Yes there are sugar free antacids, should be right along side the regular ones.

You need something with a "basic" property to tame the "acid". I know this sounds horrible but try a teaspoon of vinegar in about 6-8 ounces of water. That should help.

          Best wishes!

Ginger works really well for heartburn. It doesn't taste that great but it works. mince some up and add to a cup of warm water and make a tea with it. Strain it and drink the gingered water, if you need to add a bit of splenda. I used to have really bad heartburn and was at a Chinese resteraunt and this lady made this for me. I have used it every since.

Apple cider vinegar. Don't ask me why it works but it does. Cheaper than tums also

I know for a fact that Pepto has sucralose (Splenda) in SOME of its stuff. I *think* the pink chewable tablets they make should be okay, but double-check the ingredients.

Re: Ugh, that was a mistake

I checked the chewable remegel box and they are 2.5 carbs each tablet!! I will definately have to find an alternative, had a bad day yesterday and had 5 of them!! Today I had just one as I really needed it.
I may have to go back to the doctors, I could take omeprazole, though I can't have it long term as I have osteoarhtritis and its contraindicated. This is prescription drug and have one tablet a day.
I can't do the ginger tea all the time as sometimes I need something at night, so usually I have the remegel by the side of my bed.
I'm not sure if its the diet that is making it worse or that I'm just having a bad patch with the continuous heartburn.

vinegar is an acid not a base

if you need a carb free base try baking soda as until recent yrs it was actually marketed for its tummy neutralizing effects.

Can you drink it cold? If so you could have a (covered) jug of it beside your bed with a glass handy instead of the remegel.
