  • Rash ?

I started Atkin on March 1st and have been very happy with the results this far. Last weekend I went swiming and then later I broke out in a very itchy rash. I dont know if it is from the pool water or could it be from my body breaking down fats? My arm and chest itch the worst. I have tried hydracortizone ( sp ) and warm baths. Have any of you had this happen

Do you swim in that pool often or was it the first time?
Could be a reaction to the pool chemicals.

I personally have not heard of this happening to anyone on Atkins.
And you are on it now for over 3 weeks? But the rash started right after the swim?

My guess is the chemicals weren't properly balanced they will cause rashes if they aren't. I think it's too much of a coincidence that it started right after swimming, don't think it has anything to do with Atkins.

Did you use any new sunscreens?

I don't relish outing myself as a freak of nature with my very first post , but I always get a rash after about 3 weeks on Atkins / low carb diet.

I've re-started the diet enough times () over the years to know that it's definitely a direct cause, and always at around 3 weeks. It always appears in the same place (back of my neck), and gets red and angry. It normally goes away on it's own after a couple of weeks (but this time has re-appeared at the start of week 7).

No idea what the detailed cause is.

I went to the GP when I first got it (I hadn't linked it with low-carb at that point), and he'd never seen anything like it! He gave me cortezone cream, but I don't think it did any good.

I now take a one-a-day antihistamine when I get it, and I'm not sure that does any good either, but it might be worth a shot!

        Good luck!

            Re: Rash ?

Dr. Atkins mentioned rashes as being a result of yeast overgrowth and related it to the diet. I haven't read that chapter in a while--but it explains a connection.
            or
I wonder if it could be part of the detoxification process your body goes through at the beginning of the diet?

That could be true as I do have a nail infection at the minute. But I don't think cheese gives me problems, moreso its sugar. I thought that it was chocolate that caused me problems with nails, but I think its actually the amount of sugar I used to consume along with the chocolate.
